OMV's Leadership Handover Coincides with Earnings Test and Dividend Shift

OMV shareholders face a pivotal moment as the Austrian energy group prepares to report first-quarter earnings on April 30, 2026. The figures arrive amid a significant leadership transition and mounting pressure on the company's prized dividend.
Analyst consensus points to a headline surge in profitability. Six analysts forecast earnings per share of EUR 1.32 for Q1 2026, a dramatic leap from the EUR 0.44 reported a year earlier. Group revenue is expected to climb nearly 25% to approximately EUR 7.76 billion. Yet these robust figures mask substantial operational headwinds that have emerged in the period.
The quarter was marred by supply chain disruptions linked to Middle East tensions, which triggered one-off hedging losses of around EUR 100 million. Concurrently, the Fuels segment faced a EUR 150 million hit to its operating result from lower end-customer margins and planned refinery maintenance. These pressures are starkly visible in the refining business, where the margin per barrel collapsed from EUR 10.76 to EUR 6.65. This decline occurred despite refinery utilization rising to 92% from 85% in the prior period, highlighting a challenging economic environment. Overall production also dipped, falling to 288,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day from 300,000 barrels.
Beyond the quarterly noise, a structural change is reshaping OMV's income stream. The company's future dividend policy will now draw from two sources: 50% of dividends from its key joint venture, Borouge International (BGI), plus 20-30% of the operating cash flow generated outside of BGI. This shift coincides with a near-term shortfall. The planned initial public offering of BGI on the Abu Dhabi Stock Exchange has been postponed to 2027 due to market volatility. Consequently, OMV's dividend receipt from the venture for 2026 will be halved to USD 250 million. Analysts estimate this will reduce OMV's total dividend per share for 2026 by EUR 0.60 to EUR 0.70.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Omv?
For the 2025 financial year, the board has proposed a dividend of EUR 4.40 per share, which includes a special dividend of EUR 1.25. Shareholders will vote on this distribution at the Annual General Meeting on May 27, with an ex-dividend date of June 8.
The financial recalibration will unfold under new leadership. The Supervisory Board is set to appoint Emma Delaney as the new Chief Executive Officer, effective September 2026. An Irish citizen with nearly three decades of exclusive experience at BP, Delaney will be the first woman to lead OMV. She most recently served as BP's Executive Vice President with global responsibility for fuels, biofuels, lubricants, aviation fuel, and e-mobility, alongside expertise in upstream and LNG operations. Her initial term is for three years, with an option for a two-year extension. She succeeds Alfred Stern, who announced in May 2025 he would not seek another term. CFO Reinhard Florey will remain in his role for an additional two years, providing financial continuity.
The market holds mixed views on OMV's strategic direction. The creation of BGI—following the merger of Borealis and Borouge and the acquisition of Canada's Nova Chemicals—has positioned the entity as the world's fourth-largest polyolefin producer. OMV holds a 50% stake alongside Abu Dhabi's XRG. From the second quarter of 2026, management anticipates a steady quarterly earnings contribution of roughly EUR 140 million from the joint venture. However, RBC Capital Markets recently downgraded OMV to "Underperform," slashing its price target to EUR 46. The bank cited industry-wide overcapacity in the chemicals sector and OMV's increased reliance on BGI within a difficult market, also trimming its 2026 net profit estimate by 15%.
