OHB SE: A Pivotal Year Ahead as Major Contracts Loom
07.03.2026 - 07:15:05 | boerse-global.deThe Bremen-based aerospace group is positioning itself for a potentially transformative period. With one significant European Space Agency (ESA) contract already secured, the company is engaged in advanced discussions for a defense project of unprecedented scale. This has prompted investors to look toward a key March date, questioning whether a fundamental re-rating of the equity is on the horizon.
A Solid Operational Foundation and Ambitious Targets
The company's operational momentum is clear. Its order backlog recently surged by 47 percent to exceed €3.1 billion. This strength is further bolstered by the successful February launch of Amazon satellites aboard the Ariane 6 rocket, a positive development for OHB subsidiary MT Aerospace.
In response to this robust performance, management has raised its medium-term guidance significantly. The group now targets total output of €1.4 billion by 2026, accompanied by an EBITDA margin of 11 percent. Looking further ahead, OHB is aiming to reach the €2 billion revenue mark from 2028 onward.
The Immediate Catalyst: A High-Speed Asteroid Mission
On February 10, OHB's Italian subsidiary formalized an €81.2 million contract with the ESA. The agreement covers the development of the RAMSES spacecraft, designed to study the asteroid Apophis during its close approach to Earth in 2029. When preparatory measures are included, the total project volume reaches approximately €150 million.
This mission presents a distinct technical challenge: velocity. The spacecraft must be ready for launch in just 3.5 years, a timeline that compresses typical development cycles considerably. OHB's confidence in meeting this deadline highlights its technical prowess, building on its prior experience delivering the Hera mission within record timeframes.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying OHB SE?
The Potential Game-Changer: A €10 Billion Defense Project
However, the most significant catalyst for shareholder value lies in the defense sector. Since late January, confirmed talks have been underway with German defense contractor Rheinmetall concerning the Bundeswehr's "SATCOMBw Stufe 4" initiative. This project involves the creation of a sovereign satellite network, with an estimated total value of up to €10 billion.
The proposed division of labor is clearly outlined: Rheinmetall would handle military systems integration, while OHB would supply the satellite technology. In preparation for the required production volumes, OHB has already secured manufacturing capacity in Schöneck, Saxony. The outcome is not assured, however. Established competitor Airbus Defence and Space is also vying for the contract. Furthermore, the planned merger of the space divisions of Airbus, Thales, and Leonardo could substantially intensify competitive pressures.
Conclusion: Financials Due in March Hold the Key
For investors, the next critical milestone is March 19, 2026. On this date, with the publication of its audited financial statements for 2025, OHB must demonstrate that its impressive order growth is translating into profitable cash flows. Given the substantial investments required for its large-scale project pipeline, the company's liquidity position will be under particular scrutiny.
