OHB's Record Orders and Growing Earnings Overshadowed by Volatile Trading and a Modest Dividend

OHB SE's stock swings wildly as only 5.68% of shares trade freely; a 0.10% dividend yield is now fully taxed, but operational growth and space contracts offer hope.

The market for OHB SE shares has turned into a daily puzzle of sharp swings. On Tuesday, the stock tumbled 4.69% to €569.00, erasing much of the prior session's 1.53% gain. That pattern of wild oscillations has defined recent weeks: a 13.62% surge on 21 May, a 7.41% drop two days later, then another recovery followed by this latest retreat.

Behind the turbulence lies a structural quirk. Only 5.68% of OHB's 19.15 million shares are in free float, a sliver of equity that amplifies every order into a large price move. Tuesday's intraday range of €553.00 to €604.00 — a spread of €51.00 in a single session — underscores the point. The stock is living news-cycle to news-cycle, not quarter to quarter.

That news cycle now includes a dividend that has lost some of its appeal for retail investors. The board is proposing a payout of €0.60 per share from 2025 net income, unchanged from last year. But the tax treatment has shifted. The previous year's distribution came from the company's tax-contributed capital account, meaning private shareholders escaped immediate withholding tax, solidarity surcharge and church tax. This time the dividend will be paid from retained earnings and is fully subject to the 25% capital gains tax. The company notes that the balance of the tax-free capital account is reviewed annually, so a repeat of the 2025 tax break was never guaranteed.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying OHB SE?

At Monday's close of €596.00, the gross dividend yields a paltry 0.10%, making it a footnote for most investors. What matters far more is the operational performance. For the 2025 financial year, OHB reported total output of €1.25 billion and adjusted EBIT of €84.0 million. Earnings per share came in at €2.61 — more than four times the proposed dividend. The momentum has carried into 2026: first-quarter total output rose 15% to €279.3 million, the order book hit a record €3.35 billion, and adjusted EBITDA climbed to €27.3 million.

Positive developments in the space business add further texture. On 19 May, OHB formed a joint venture with defence tech firm Helsing called KIRK to develop a space-based surveillance system. Two days later, the SOVA-S satellite mission — led by OHB subsidiary OHB Czechspace — was selected by ESA for its next development phase. SOVA-S will study how atmospheric gravity waves affect the upper atmosphere, a research goal ESA has confirmed separately.

The dividend itself may be small, but its clarity ahead of the annual meeting is a welcome side note. The virtual general meeting is scheduled for 8 June 2026 at 10:00 MESZ. If approved, the shares will trade ex-dividend on 9 June, with payment on 11 June. For the broader investment thesis, however, all eyes are on 6 August and 12 November, when second- and third-quarter results are due. Whether the barrage of good news from satellite reconnaissance and defence translates into concrete orders will determine if the share price can settle into a trend — or remain captive to its own tight float.
