Nvidia is charging into earnings season with a dual-pronged strategy that stretches far beyond its core chip business. Just days before reporting first-quarter results on May 20, the company unveiled a new networking platform designed for the largest AI factories on earth, while simultaneously deepening its push into enterprise software through a partnership with ServiceNow. The timing is no coincidence — both announcements land as the market braces for what could be a defining moment for the entire semiconductor sector.

Spectrum-X Brings Ethernet to the AI Factory Floor

On May 6, Nvidia officially launched Spectrum-X, a platform it bills as the first AI-native Ethernet fabric purpose-built for gigascale data centers. These are the sprawling facilities where models with trillions of parameters are trained and deployed — environments where standard Ethernet has historically struggled. The core challenge is that conventional Ethernet wasn't architected for the highly parallel workloads of generative AI. Spectrum-X addresses this with optimized congestion control and synchronization, designed to keep GPU clusters fully utilized even in multi-tenant settings where numerous customers share the same infrastructure.

Project Arc and the ServiceNow Alliance

A day earlier, on May 5, Nvidia and ServiceNow announced a collaboration centered on autonomous AI agents for enterprise workflows. The headline product is Project Arc, a desktop agent unveiled at ServiceNow's Knowledge 2026 conference in Las Vegas. Running on Nvidia's OpenShell runtime — a secure execution environment for AI agents — and steered through the ServiceNow AI Control Tower, Project Arc aims to automate complex, multi-step processes across IT, customer service, and operations. ServiceNow is also integrating its AI Control Tower into Nvidia's Enterprise AI Factory, extending governance capabilities to large model workloads in the data center.

Underpinning the partnership is Nvidia's new Nemotron 3 Nano Omni model. This open, multimodal architecture processes images, audio, and text within a single framework, delivering up to nine times greater efficiency compared to systems that route different input types through separate models, according to the company.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

The Numbers That Matter

Wall Street has set a high bar for the May 20 earnings report. Analysts project first-quarter revenue of $78.8 billion — roughly 79 percent above the prior year — with earnings per share climbing to $1.77, more than double the year-ago figure. Nvidia itself has guided for $78 billion in revenue. For context, the company generated approximately $216 billion in total revenue during fiscal 2026, a 65 percent increase year over year, with non-GAAP gross margins of 75.2 percent and free cash flow of nearly $97 billion.

The outlook for the second quarter is equally ambitious. The Street expects revenue of $86.6 billion, though some analysts argue that current estimates remain conservative given the spending commitments from Nvidia's largest customers. Meta has raised its investment ceiling to $145 billion, while Microsoft announced 2026 capital expenditures of $190 billion — well above the $154 billion analysts had anticipated.

Supply Chain Shifts and Platform Transitions

Nvidia's production footprint is migrating eastward. Asian suppliers now account for roughly 90 percent of manufacturing costs, up from 65 percent a year ago, driven by concentrated 3-nanometer wafer fabrication and high-bandwidth memory procurement. This growing dependence on Asian supply chains adds a layer of geopolitical complexity to an already intricate production picture.

Looking further ahead, Nvidia is preparing the transition from its Blackwell architecture to the Vera-Rubin platform. Internal projections suggest a tenfold reduction in inference costs compared to current hardware — a metric that becomes increasingly critical as hyperscalers grapple with the economics of running AI at scale.

Nvidia at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The China Conundrum

One structural risk hangs over the entire narrative. US export restrictions have effectively locked Nvidia out of the Chinese market for advanced AI chips. CEO Jensen Huang has pegged the company's share of AI accelerators in China at zero percent — a stark reversal from just two years ago when Nvidia dominated that market. The first-quarter guidance already assumes zero data center revenue from China. While the company's largest customers are spending at unprecedented levels, the complete loss of what was once a major market remains a persistent drag on the growth story.

Stock Momentum and the Earnings Trigger

Nvidia's shares are trading near their 52-week high at roughly €180, having gained more than 74 percent over the past twelve months. The stock sits comfortably above all key moving averages. Analysts see revenue growth exceeding 80 percent as the threshold that could trigger another leg higher. Whether Nvidia clears that bar on May 20 — and what guidance the management team provides for the remainder of the fiscal year — will likely set the tone not just for the company's valuation, but for the entire semiconductor landscape.
