Novo Nordisk Faces a Pivotal Week as Pipeline Data and Oral Wegovy Sales Collide
31.05.2026 - 17:22:58 | boerse-global.de
Novo Nordisk’s battered shares enter a defining stretch, with clinical catalysts and commercial momentum converging in a single week. After a steep slide that left the stock 35.73% lower over the past twelve months, investors are looking to the 86th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in New Orleans for signs that the Danish drugmaker’s pipeline can regain the initiative.
The stock closed at €39.05 on Friday, virtually flat on the day, though it has clawed back 13.06% over the past month. Yet the year-to-date deficit remains a stubborn 12.59%, and at a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 10.69—well below its five-year median—the market is pricing in considerable uncertainty. The split-adjusted record high of $81.44 from last year feels distant; the 200-day moving average still looms as a technical barrier.
CagriSema and Zenagamtide Take Centre Stage
Novo Nordisk plans to present 40 abstracts at the ADA meeting, which runs from 5 to 8 June. The most heavily anticipated data will come from the phase 3 REIMAGINE 1–3 programme for CagriSema, a combination of an amylin receptor agonist and a GLP-1 receptor agonist designed to improve glycaemic control and weight loss beyond current monotherapies. Alongside that, phase 2 results for Zenagamtide—another weekly injection that targets the same dual pathway—will give analysts a broader view of the company’s next-generation metabolic portfolio.
The clinical picture arrives against a fiercely competitive backdrop. A market report from Cinco Días on 31 May highlighted obesity, oral GLP-1 therapies, and artificial intelligence in drug development as the three themes that will determine which healthcare stocks regain momentum. European healthcare equities have slipped roughly 3% this year, while broader health-sector names are down about 5%. For Novo Nordisk, strong data at ADA is seen as critical to proving that its franchise can expand rather than merely defend.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?
Oral Wegovy Delivers a Surprise Edge
Possibly the brightest near-term commercial signal came from the launch of the Wegovy pill—the oral form of semaglutide—in the United States. In its first week on the market, the tablet generated approximately 18,410 new prescriptions, dwarfing the 3,707 prescriptions Eli Lilly’s oral competitor Foundayo recorded during its comparable launch window. More importantly, around 80% of Wegovy pill users had not previously been treated with a GLP-1 therapy. That suggests the oral formulation is expanding the market rather than cannibalising existing injections, a strategic win that could broaden Novo Nordisk’s addressable patient pool.
European regulators are also moving in the company’s favour. On 22 May, the CHMP of the European Medicines Agency recommended approval of both Wegovy HD—a higher 7.2 milligram dose—and the Wegovy pill. The dual endorsement underpins the thesis that oral delivery and higher-dose options can drive the next leg of growth.
A Tight Calendar of Catalysts
Beyond the ADA conference sessions, Novo Nordisk has scheduled a dedicated R&D investor webcast on 7 June at 16:30 CDT. Management will use the call to contextualise the trial results and outline pipeline priorities. The broader calendar is dense: the US ISM manufacturing index lands on 1 June, JOLTS data on 2 June, services PMI on 3 June, and the key non-farm payrolls report on 5 June. For a growth stock like Novo Nordisk, shifts in bond yields and risk appetite can amplify or mute company-specific news.
Novo Nordisk at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Looking ahead, a US Food and Drug Administration decision on CagriSema for weight management is expected in the second half of the year, and the company plans to initiate a phase 3 study for a high-dose version of the same candidate. The ADA data set, combined with the early traction of the Wegovy pill, will test whether the recent recovery has staying power—or whether Eli Lilly’s data advantage on Mounjaro will continue to cap Novo Nordisk’s shares.
