The German onshore wind sector is currently characterized by fierce price competition. In this challenging climate, Nordex Group has not only secured a new project contract but, more importantly, has locked in a reliable, long-term revenue stream. The company's latest order, coupled with a multi-decade service agreement, demonstrates its strategic focus on protecting operational margins as auction prices decline.

Financial Resilience and Stock Performance

Despite significant regulatory price pressure across the industry, Nordex shares are demonstrating notable strength on the capital markets. Closing at €44.80 on Wednesday, the stock has advanced by approximately 49% since the start of the year. This price places it a mere 3% below its 52-week high of €46.20. Market observers attribute this sustained positive trend to the company's fundamental strategy of bundling turbine sales with high-margin, long-term service contracts, a model that provides stability in a competitive environment.

The Strategic Value of Service Agreements

A critical component of Nordex's recent deal is a 20-year premium service contract. This long-term agreement, under which Nordex will maintain and service the infrastructure, creates predictable, recurring income and fosters enduring client relationships. This approach to margin protection is increasingly vital. The latest onshore wind auction by the German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) in February was heavily oversubscribed. Against a volume of 3,445 megawatts, bids totaled 7,858 megawatts. This intense competition pushed the average award value down to 5.54 cents per kilowatt-hour, its lowest level in eight years.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nordex?

Details of the New Sauerland Project

The specific project underpinning this strategy is located in Finnentrop. Utility company STAWAG Energie GmbH has ordered five N163/6.X turbines for the planned Frettertal wind farm in the district of Olpe. The turbines, with a hub height of 164 meters, are specifically designed for the site's topography. Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2027, with grid connection planned for early 2028.
