Nokia's stock declined approximately four percent on Friday, a move coinciding with a significant wave of analyst downgrades. This negative sentiment from research firms emerged in the same week the telecommunications equipment giant unveiled a comprehensive new suite of optical networking products.

Conflicting Analyst Views Create Uncertainty

The downward revisions came from multiple analysis houses, including Arete Research, Danske Bank, and DNB Carnegie. These firms collectively pointed to uncertain market conditions as the primary rationale for their more cautious stance. Arete Research specifically moved its rating on Nokia from "Buy" to "Neutral."

This cautious outlook stands in sharp contrast to a recent upgrade from Morgan Stanley. Just days earlier, that firm had raised its price target for Nokia from €6.50 to €8.50. Morgan Stanley's analysts cited growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure as the driver for their increased optimism.

This divergence highlights a core tension for investors: the promising long-term growth narrative around Nokia's AI infrastructure business is being weighed against near-term doubts regarding the pace of its commercial realization.

Unveiling a Modular Platform for AI-Driven Networks

The company's strategic product offensive was showcased at the OFC conference in Los Angeles on March 16. Nokia introduced a new portfolio of coherent optical solutions built on a modular principle. Rather than crafting unique solutions for every application, the strategy relies on flexibly combining standardized components.

These components include four new digital signal processors and optical frontends based on indium phosphide and silicon photonics. Nokia claims this approach can reduce customers' total cost of ownership by up to 70 percent. A newly designed compact inline amplifier could allow network operators to deliver up to 40 times more services within the same physical footprint.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?

The company stated its new Multi-Rail Optical Line System is scheduled for availability in the second half of 2026. First samples of the new coherent solutions are expected from mid-2027.

Nokia emphasizes that its vertically integrated manufacturing model is key to this strategy. By developing and producing its own signal processors and optical components internally, the company aims to minimize external dependencies and enable its modular "building block" approach.

Upcoming Financial Reports as a Key Catalyst

Investor attention now turns to Nokia's upcoming financial calendar. The company's Annual General Meeting is set for April 9, followed by the release of its first-quarter 2026 results on April 23.

This quarterly report will be scrutinized for evidence that Nokia's substantial investments in AI infrastructure—including its partnership with Nvidia—are beginning to translate into concrete revenue. Until such financial confirmation materializes, a wait-and-see attitude appears to be prevailing among many market participants, who are hesitant to fully price in the long-term potential of the new product lines.
