Nokia has cleared two major hurdles in the space of a week, concluding patent disputes with three of the world’s largest PC makers while rolling out a suite of artificial-intelligence tools designed to automate telecom networks. The twin announcements signal a company intent on resolving legacy legal battles and pivoting hard toward software-driven growth.

The patent peace began on June 18 with a multi-year cross-licensing agreement with Lenovo, replacing a 2021 deal and covering foundational connectivity technologies. That was followed by settlements with Asus and Acer, after a Munich court had blocked direct sales of certain notebooks in Germany over Nokia’s HEVC/H.265 video-coding patents. Acer confirmed on June 23 that shipments had resumed, and Asus struck its own deal the next day. Both agreements include arbitration clauses, with pending patent proceedings in the UK suspended after a British appeals court ruled in May that Nokia’s “adjustable licences” satisfied its FRAND obligations. “This demonstrates the strength of our patent portfolio and our investment in research and standardisation,” said chief licensing officer Susanna Martikainen.

On the network front, Nokia used a Copenhagen trade fair to unveil autonomous network agents — AI tools that can detect cyberattacks, analyse faults and fix disruptions without human intervention. The company claims productivity gains of up to 80% versus conventional operations, and is working closely with Japan’s NTT DOCOMO on complex radio network upgrades. Separately, Nokia expanded its partnership with Amazon Web Services to help telecom operators run infrastructure in the cloud. The AI push is intended to convert surging demand into tangible revenue. In the first quarter, sales from AI and cloud customers jumped 49%, accounting for 8% of total group revenue, and fresh orders in that segment reached €1 billion.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?

The stock, which trades at €12.12, has more than doubled since the start of the year, gaining around 117%. But it remains nearly 19% below its June peak of €14.97, and the shares have lost ground over the past month as investors digest the speed of the transformation. Nokia reiterated its full-year guidance for operating profit of up to €2.5 billion and expects its network business to deliver double-digit growth in 2026.

The immediate challenge is proving that the new software can generate measurable earnings quickly enough to justify the elevated valuation. The licensing windfall from the PC sector will help in the near term, but it is the AI-powered network overhaul that must carry the long-term story.
