Nokia’s Twin Catalysts: Courtroom Victory and Agentic AI Ignite a 115% Rally, But Valuation Looms Large

A legal victory in London and agentic AI software launch drive Nokia shares to decade highs, but lofty valuation and single-digit margins raise caution.

A legal triumph in London and a breakthrough in autonomous networking have converged to fuel one of Nokia’s most explosive stock runs in years. The Finnish network equipment maker saw its shares surge to levels not touched in over a decade, only to give back some gains late in the week as investors weighed the steep price of future growth.

The rally began in earnest after the Court of Appeal blocked patent infringement claims from Taiwanese tech groups Acer and Asus over video-coding technologies. Nokia had offered to resolve licensing terms through arbitration, scuttling a trial scheduled for this summer. That legal win came just as the company unveiled a new generation of network-management software built on “agentic AI” – systems capable of diagnosing and fixing connection failures before customers even notice an outage, sharply reducing the need for on-site technician visits. The market awarded that launch a 12% pop on Tuesday alone.

Adding to the momentum, US rival Cisco reported a 217% surge in AI infrastructure orders from hyperscale data centers in its latest quarter. Jefferies analyst William Beavington cited the data as a clear buy signal for Nokia, which competes head-to-head with Cisco in routers and switches. The bullish outlook from across the Atlantic brightened the prospects for Nokia’s own hardware division, where fresh orders from cloud and AI clients have already reached €1 billion.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?

The operational improvements are not just hype. In the first quarter, Nokia’s comparable operating profit jumped 54% to €281 million, and the management has turned noticeably more optimistic. It now expects the addressable AI and cloud market to expand at a compound annual rate of 27% through 2028, while its own network infrastructure business should deliver double-digit growth in 2026. Profit margins have also improved following the Infinera acquisition.

To sharpen its focus on high-margin future technologies such as 6G and edge computing, Nokia has agreed to sell its fixed wireless access business to US firm Inseego in exchange for a minority stake in the buyer. The transaction is slated to close in the fourth quarter of 2026, underscoring a strategic shift away from legacy assets.

Yet the stock’s meteoric rise has pushed its valuation into rarefied territory. With a price-to-earnings ratio above 100 and a pre-tax margin still in the single digits, investors are paying a hefty premium for promised expansion. The shares ended Friday at €11.96, trimming the year-to-date gain to roughly 115% but still leaving them nearly 39% above their 50-day moving average. Analysts caution that any slowdown in telecom automation budgets or a tapering of the AI order wave could trigger sharp sell-offs at these levels. Chartwatchers are eyeing support near €10.80: as long as that floor holds, the uptrend remains intact; a break below it would send a clear warning.
