At the 2026 Mobile World Congress, a significant alliance was unveiled between Nokia and Nvidia. This partnership aims to fundamentally reshape the purpose of conventional mobile networks. The core strategy involves converting existing network infrastructure into what the companies term "AI Factories." These platforms are designed to handle not only standard mobile traffic but also computationally demanding artificial intelligence workloads.

A New Revenue Model for Underutilized Assets

The initiative addresses a well-known structural inefficiency within the telecom sector. According to industry data presented at the MWC, traditional mobile networks typically operate at only about 30 percent of their total capacity on average. The collaboration with Nvidia seeks to monetize the remaining 70 percent by deploying AI-RAN (AI-powered Radio Access Network) technology to run advanced AI processes.

This shift opens new revenue streams for mobile network operators, moving beyond simple connectivity. Practical applications highlighted include real-time language translation services, AI-powered telephone assistants tailored for small and medium-sized enterprises, and connected camera systems for public safety and industrial monitoring.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?

International Momentum and a Case Study in Scale

Global adoption is already underway. Reports from the congress indicate that more than 20 network operators worldwide are constructing similar AI infrastructure, with particular focus on high-growth markets. India serves as a prime example of both the need and the potential. Data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India shows the country surpassed one billion data users by the end of 2025, with approximately 400 million already on 5G networks. To manage this immense data volume, features like self-optimizing networks and predictive maintenance are considered essential.

The widespread economic viability of integrating GPUs throughout network infrastructure is still under assessment. Initial deployments are targeted for high-traffic zones such as urban centers and major stadiums.

Laying the Groundwork for a 6G Future

The long-term vision of the Nokia-Nvidia partnership is the creation of an "AI-native" network architecture. This concept is expected to be central to the forthcoming 6G standard. The approach emphasizes software-based upgrades over continuous hardware replacement, allowing for more agile network evolution. By forging this path now, Nokia is positioning itself early as a key infrastructure provider for a mobile generation still in its conceptual phase.
