The Finnish network equipment maker has seen its shares more than double since the start of 2026, with the stock surging 124% to trade near €12.48, just shy of its 52-week high. The initial catalyst was clear: Nokia positioned itself as a key beneficiary of Europe’s artificial intelligence infrastructure buildout, landing a strategic investment from Nvidia and embedding its radios into GPU-powered 6G base stations. But a series of developments in recent weeks suggests the rally is drawing support from additional engines — patent licensing victories and a push into defense communications — that could help sustain momentum even as valuation reaches eye-watering levels.

Ruling in Nokia’s Favor Bolsters Licensing Revenue

On May 21, Nokia reached a patent settlement with Chinese automaker Geely, resolving a European dispute over connected-vehicle technologies such as navigation and real-time traffic data. The agreement adds to a growing stream of licensing income from the company’s portfolio of more than 7,000 patents related to 5G standards. Just days earlier, on May 12, the UK Court of Appeal permanently dismissed lawsuits from Acer and Asus against Nokia, citing the company’s willingness to settle disputes under fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms through arbitration. The twin legal wins strengthen Nokia’s hand in extracting royalties from industries where connectivity is becoming critical — particularly automotive, where vehicles are evolving into highly networked platforms.

Defense Partnership Opens a Government Channel

Nokia is simultaneously expanding beyond consumer telecoms through its Federal Solutions unit. Together with Lockheed Martin, the company launched a modular 5G system with an open architecture on May 5, targeting US and allied armed forces. The product marries Nokia’s commercial 5G technology with Lockheed Martin’s 5G.MIL offering, aiming to provide secure, resilient communications for mission-critical operations. This market operates under different rules: security and reliability trump raw data speeds, and the high barriers to entry promise steadier margins than the cyclical network equipment business.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?

Strong Quarterly Results Underpin the Narrative

Nokia reported first-quarter numbers that gave the bull case solid footing. Revenue hit €4.5 billion, with like-for-like growth of 4% after adjusting for currency and portfolio changes. The comparable diluted earnings per share came in at €0.05, up from €0.03 a year earlier. Operating profit jumped 54% to €281 million, driven by a 49% surge in the AI and cloud segment and a 25% gain in optical networks. Gross margin improved to 45%. Management kept its full-year 2026 guidance for comparable operating profit at €2.0 billion to €2.5 billion, while planning capital expenditure of between €900 million and €1.0 billion, much of it destined for optical network capacity to serve AI data centers. The board has proposed a dividend of €0.14 per share.

The AI Halo: Nvidia Tie-Up and New Lab

The core of the stock’s re-rating remains the partnership with Nvidia, which became Nokia’s second-largest shareholder after investing at roughly €6 per share in October 2025. Analysts at CFRA and Argus have set price targets of $16 and $15 respectively, labeling the stock a “buy.” Nokia recently opened an AI Networking Innovation Lab in Sunnyvale, collaborating with AMD, Lenovo, and Supermicro on networking gear for AI infrastructure. Vodafone is testing IoT functions over AWS using Nokia’s technology, and MTN is piloting edge-AI hubs on its African cell towers. These initiatives reinforce the image of Nokia as a core enabler of the AI era.

Stretched Valuation Raises the Stakes

Yet the market has already priced in a great deal of optimism. The stock trades at 81 times trailing 12-month earnings, more than four times the five-year median of 19.6. The GF Value platform estimates Nokia’s intrinsic worth at just $4.94 a share, suggesting a severe overvaluation. Annualized volatility of 66% makes this a high-risk bet. The rally reflects genuine operational progress and a transformed business mix, but it also relies on the assumption that patent licensing, defense contracts, and AI networking will translate into significantly higher earnings. After a 42.74% move in the past 30 days alone, any disappointment on the guidance front could trigger a sharp reversal.

A High-Stakes Bet on Execution

Nokia is no longer just a network equipment vendor struggling with margin pressure. It is carving out lucrative niches in patent monetization, government security, and AI infrastructure. The stock’s 118.57% year-to-date gain (per the secondary source) mirrors a fundamental shift in perception. But the current price demands near-perfect execution: the company must grow licensed revenue, win defense contracts, and scale its optical and cloud businesses — all while keeping costs in check. The dividend of €0.14 offers a negligible yield at these levels. For now, Nokia is a story of legitimate transformation backed by strong quarterly numbers, but the valuation multiples leave virtually no room for error in a market that has already priced in the best-case scenario.
