Nokia has strengthened its position in the UK's 5G infrastructure landscape by securing a multi-year agreement with Virgin Media O2 (VMO2). While this represents a significant commercial win, a closer examination reveals a more nuanced picture that has left market analysts divided on the stock's prospects.

Analyst Consensus Shows Caution

The investment community currently reflects the ambiguous outlook for the Finnish telecommunications equipment maker. According to a consensus view compiled from 22 analysts, the average price target for Nokia shares stands at €6.55. This figure sits slightly below the recent trading level of approximately €6.93. The divergence in expert opinion was highlighted in late March when two major institutions issued conflicting ratings. Goldman Sachs upgraded the stock from "Sell" to "Neutral," simultaneously raising its price target substantially from €3.50 to €8.00. On the very same day, Grupo Santander downgraded its rating from "Outperform" to "Underperform," setting a target of €6.85 per share.

Year-to-date, the equity has advanced by roughly 24%. However, it has retreated by just over 4% in the past week, indicating ongoing market uncertainty about whether new contract wins can sufficiently offset rising cost pressures over the long term.

The Details of the UK Network Deal

The agreement with VMO2, part of the operator's "Mobile Transformation Plan," involves modernizing its UK mobile network with Nokia's AirScale product portfolio. This upgrade will incorporate Massive MIMO technology and modular baseband units, aiming to prepare the network for the next evolution to 5G-Advanced, which promises higher speeds and reduced latency.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?

A key detail, however, is that Nokia will share this contract with its rival Ericsson. Reports indicate the Swedish company will handle approximately 55% of the radio access network (RAN) modernization, with Nokia taking on the remaining 45%. VMO2 has outlined total infrastructure investments of around £700 million by 2026, meaning Nokia secures a substantial, though not dominant, portion of this expenditure.

Beyond hardware supply, the partnership includes joint innovation programs focused on network automation and AI-driven performance optimization. This comes as Nokia's management has recently cautioned that persistent supply chain challenges and the infrastructure build-out required for artificial intelligence are putting upward pressure on equipment costs.

Growth and Restructuring in India

Alongside the UK announcement, Nokia published its Mobile Broadband Index report for India. The forecast projects that the number of 5G users in India will surpass the one billion mark by 2031. Nearly half of all mobile data traffic in the country already runs over 5G networks today.

Nokia at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Nokia supplies all three major Indian operators: Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea. The company's revenue in the region increased by 12% in 2025, reaching 16,250 crore Indian rupees. Despite this growth, Nokia is undertaking a structural reorganization of its regional leadership. This move is designed to protect profit margins as the rollout of AI services begins to alter network load patterns.
