Nokia has unveiled what it calls the industry's first commercial AI-RAN platform, developed jointly with Nvidia, and expanded its 5G partnership with Taiwan Mobile — yet its stock has suffered one of the steepest weekly declines in recent memory. The disconnect between operational progress and market sentiment is widening by the day, and the July 23 second-quarter report will test whether technology announcements are translating into hard revenue.

Shares closed at €8.90 on Friday, shedding 2.39% in a single session and clocking an 18.31% rout over seven trading days. Over the past month, the stock has tumbled 25.90%. The 14-day relative strength index has sunk to 31.5, firmly in oversold territory — a level that historically suggests selling pressure may be exhausted. Even after the recent bloodletting, however, Nokia remains up 59.21% year-to-date, and the current price sits 158% above its 52-week low of €3.45 set on August 1, 2025.

In an unusual move just days before the earnings release, SEB Equities upgraded Nokia from "Hold" to "Buy" and set a €12 price target, arguing that demand for artificial intelligence and cloud technology could accelerate growth. The broader analyst community rates the stock a "Moderate Buy" with a 12-month consensus target of $12.57, though individual estimates range widely from $5.00 to $21.00, reflecting deep uncertainty about the pace of the AI-driven transformation.

The bullish thesis centers on Nokia's latest product announcement. On July 15, the company introduced the AI-RAN platform, developed with Nvidia, which it claims can boost spectrum efficiency by more than 20% today. Nokia targets a 50% improvement by 2027 and over 100% by 2028 — effectively doubling capacity in existing frequency bands. The solution works across 4G, 5G and future 6G networks, and can be deployed as an upgrade to existing AirScale infrastructure, as a dedicated AI-RAN node, or via the cloud. Nokia is also launching a subscription model that delivers ongoing AI features and performance upgrades. Test installations are slated for late 2026, with commercial sales expected in 2027.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?

A day earlier, Nokia deepened its relationship with Taiwan Mobile, aiming to build AI-native mobile networks in Taiwan. The deal covers network intelligence, infrastructure, sustainability and resilience, with Nokia supplying its latest AirScale portfolio. The AI software promises real-time automation and predictive analytics to reduce manual intervention.

Yet even as the technology story strengthens, one major institutional investor is trimming its position. According to a filing under Finnish securities law, FMR LLC — the Fidelity fund complex — reduced its indirect stake below the 5% reporting threshold on July 8. The holding dropped from 5.20% of shares and 4.92% of voting rights to 4.87% and 4.59%, respectively. Fidelity had built the position during Nokia's multi-month rally earlier in 2026, and the partial sale comes after the stock reached valuation levels not seen in years.

Technically, the picture is mixed. The stock trades 25.6% below its 50-day moving average of €11.96, underscoring the severity of the recent sell-off. But it remains 15.3% above its 200-day average, and the annualized 30-day volatility of 66.61% warns that sharp moves in either direction are likely around the earnings date.

Nokia at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The central question for investors on Thursday is whether the AI and cloud demand that SEB highlighted is already showing up in Nokia's order book and revenue. The market has already priced in a degree of disappointment with last week's slide, meaning a report that merely confirms steady progress in AI-related segments could be enough to stabilize sentiment. A downward revision to the full-year guidance, on the other hand, would likely extend the technical downtrend. For now, the gap between Nokia's technological ambition and its stock price has rarely been wider.
