Following a period of underwhelming performance in 2025, Nestlé is implementing a decisive strategic shift. The company’s response is not a radical overhaul but a targeted refinement of its portfolio, designed to channel greater capital and managerial focus toward its most promising growth engines. This move raises key questions about the rationale behind the new direction and its practical implications.

A Strategic Pivot Prompted by 2025 Results

The catalyst for this strategic review was Nestlé's full-year 2025 financial performance. The Swiss food and beverage giant reported net earnings of 9.0 billion Swiss francs, representing a significant 17% decline. Group sales also decreased by 2% to 89.5 billion CHF. A closer look reveals a nuanced picture: organic growth remained positive at 3.5%. This figure was primarily driven by pricing actions of 2.8%, while real internal growth (RIG), a measure of volume, contributed a more modest 0.8%.

This specific combination of strong pricing but weak volume expansion is central to understanding the company's new direction. When sales volumes stagnate, the strategic imperative shifts toward concentrating resources in business segments with the most resilient pricing power and growth potential.

Portfolio Focus: Four Key Pillars and a Nutrition Reorganization

Looking ahead to 2026, Nestlé is sharpening its strategic focus around four core business areas: Coffee, Petcare, Nutrition, and strong regional positions in Confectionery & Snacks. Collectively, these pillars account for approximately 70% of the company's total sales.

A central component of this plan is the consolidation of its Nutrition and Nestlé Health Science units into a single, integrated business. This merger is intended to unlock synergies and bolster Nestlé's competitive standing in the health-focused nutrition segment. As part of this restructuring, Anna Mohl, the current CEO of Nestlé Health Science, will step down from the Executive Board effective February 28, 2026.

Streamlining Through Divestments

Concurrently, Nestlé aims to streamline its overall portfolio. The company has confirmed that discussions regarding the sale of its remaining ice cream operations to the joint venture Froneri are at an advanced stage. Further brand divestments are also planned to sharpen the company's focus on higher-growth categories.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nestle?

The market has responded favorably to these strategic announcements. Nestlé shares recently traded at 90.79 euros, marking a daily gain of 2.07%. The current price sits about 4.3% below its 52-week high of 94.88 euros.

2026 Outlook: Growth Anticipated Despite Headwinds

The strategic adjustments also account for a specific burden from 2025: a recall of infant nutrition products, which cost the company roughly 185 million CHF. Despite this, Nestlé's guidance for 2026 projects organic sales growth between 3% and 4%, with the anticipated financial impact of the recall already factored into these expectations.

In essence, Nestlé's strategy for 2026 is built on a straightforward principle: fewer distractions and greater focus. The immediate benchmarks for success will be the speed of integration within the new Nutrition and Health Science unit and the timely execution of the announced portfolio sales, most notably the ice cream business divestment.
