A fresh order from a repeat client has given Nel ASA's stock a significant boost, rallying over 12% in a week. This momentum arrives just days before the Norwegian hydrogen technology firm is set to release its first-quarter 2026 results, a report investors are counting on to validate the company's ambitious growth narrative.

The catalyst was a $7 million order from French firm Mesure Process, a subsidiary of Synqo Energies, for containerized PEM electrolyzers destined for European hydrogen refueling stations and industrial applications. The deal, announced last Friday, is notable because Mesure Process is a repeat customer. In the electrolyzer industry, such repeat business is widely seen as a key quality signal, indicating that the technology performs reliably in the field. The systems are designed for flexible green hydrogen production, capable of coupling directly with intermittent renewable energy sources.

Investors responded positively, pushing the share price up by approximately 8% on the day of the announcement to close at EUR 0.22. Weekly gains reached about 12%, with Friday's trading volume exceeding 11 million shares, well above the weekly average. The stock now sits roughly 14% above its 50-day moving average and is about 20% above its 52-week low recorded in March, translating to a year-to-date advance of around 12%.

This recent optimism, however, contrasts sharply with the company's full-year 2025 financial performance. Nel reported a net loss of 1.27 billion Norwegian kroner, while revenue contracted by 31% to 963 million kroner. Management attributed the sharp decline to irregular delivery schedules for large-scale projects.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nel ASA?

Yet, the order backlog tells a more promising story. Order intake in Q4 2025 alone surged 364% to 686 million kroner, with 93% stemming from the PEM division. This pushed the total order backlog to 1.32 billion kroner. Financially, Nel entered the second quarter with a solid liquidity position of approximately 1.6 billion kronen.

A major strategic focus is the company's next-generation technology. Since 2018, Nel has been developing its "Next Generation Pressurized Alkaline" platform. The board approved its industrialization in December 2025, targeting an initial manufacturing capacity of one gigawatt at an estimated investment cost of 300 million kroner. The EU is supporting the project with up to 135 million euros, covering about 60% of eligible costs. The new platform aims to reduce space requirements by up to 80% and cut costs by 40-60%, with commercial launch planned for the first half of 2026 and larger delivery volumes from 2027.

Corporate governance also saw a recent shift. At the Annual General Meeting on April 10, shareholders approved all board proposals, including a move to a performance-based compensation program for management using Performance Share Units, intended to better align executive incentives with long-term financial goals.

Nel ASA at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

All eyes are now fixed on Wednesday, April 22. At 07:00 CET, Nel will publish its Q1 2026 figures, followed an hour later by a virtual presentation. The market's central question is whether the swelling order backlog can finally translate into recognized revenue. While the Mesure Process order provides a positive signal, the quarterly report must demonstrate it is part of a sustained trend. A subsequent data point will arrive with the half-year report on July 15.
