Nel ASA's 2026 Pivot: A Critical Year for the Hydrogen Pioneer

17.03.2026 - 00:28:38 | boerse-global.de

Nel's revenue fell 31% in 2025, but orders surged 364% in Q4. A new electrolyzer platform launching in 2026 aims to cut costs by 40-60% and footprint by 80%.

Norwegian hydrogen technology firm Nel ASA finds itself at a defining crossroads. The company's recent financial results paint a picture of stark contrasts, setting the stage for a pivotal transformation set to culminate in 2026.

A Tale of Two Financial Stories

The company's 2025 fiscal year was characterized by opposing forces. Revenue contracted by 31% to 963 million Norwegian kroner (NOK). Management attributed this decline to the irregular delivery schedules associated with large-scale electrolyzer projects. Concurrently, the company recorded substantial asset impairments totaling 799 million NOK. These write-downs primarily concerned older alkaline electrolyzer production assets and certain goodwill, signaling a deliberate strategic shift away from legacy technology.

This narrative, however, is countered by an explosive surge in new business. Order intake in the fourth quarter alone skyrocketed by 364% to 686 million NOK. The driving force behind this growth was the PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) division, which accounted for a dominant 93% of the new orders. A standout contract was a 40-megawatt PEM electrolyzer order from HYDS for two Norwegian sites, described by Nel as its largest PEM contract by capacity to date. By year-end, the total order backlog had risen to 1.319 billion NOK, marking a 34% increase from the previous quarter.

Strategic Partnership and Financial Footing

A significant development in 2025 was the strategic investment from Samsung Engineering & Construction (Samsung E&A). In March, the Korean engineering giant acquired a 9.1% stake in Nel for approximately $33 million, becoming its largest single shareholder. As part of the agreement, Nel was appointed as Samsung E&A's preferred global hydrogen partner. This alliance allows Samsung E&A to offer turnkey hydrogen plants utilizing Nel's electrolyzers to its clients, providing a potentially powerful channel for future orders.

On the balance sheet, Nel's liquidity reserves stood at 1.617 billion NOK. While this reflects a decrease from the prior year, the position remains robust, partly due to workforce reductions of approximately 15% already implemented.

The 2026 Game Changer: A New Technology Platform

The core of Nel's strategic pivot is the scheduled launch of its new pressurized alkaline electrolyzer platform. After seven years in development and successful prototype testing, the board has given the final investment decision to establish up to 1 GW of production capacity at its Herøya facility.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nel ASA?

This next-generation technology promises to be transformative. It aims to reduce the physical footprint of installations by 80% and slash capital expenditure by 40-60%. The project is set to receive up to 135 million euros from the EU Innovation Fund, expected to cover about 60% of the eligible costs. The market launch is slated for the first half of 2026, with larger-scale deliveries commencing in 2027.

Upcoming Catalysts and Market Sentiment

The coming months present several key milestones that will shape investor perception:
* 10 April 2026 — Annual General Meeting
* 22 April 2026 — Q1 2026 Quarterly Report
* First Half 2026 — Planned commercial launch of the new platform
* 15 July 2026 — Half-Year Report

Currently, Nel's share price trades roughly 29% below its 52-week high from March 2025. The market appears to be in a wait-and-see mode, seeking concrete evidence that the strong order backlog can be successfully converted into sustained revenue. The successful and timely introduction of the new platform, coupled with the execution of its backlog, will be critical. The half-year report in July is anticipated to provide a much clearer picture of whether this strategic transition is gaining tangible traction.
