Nel ASA chairman Arvid Moss bought 100,000 shares at an average price of NOK 2.25 in late April, a personal vote of confidence that stands in stark contrast to the consensus on the sell side. The purchase came just as the Norwegian electrolyser maker reported its cash buffer at NOK 1.4 billion to 1.443 billion — enough to fund operations through the end of 2026 — and disclosed that its headcount had been slashed 26% from the peak, with personnel costs down 21% in the first quarter alone.

Yet the operational picture remains dour. Nel booked just NOK 85 million in new orders for the January-to-March period, a 73% collapse year-on-year. The order backlog shrank to NOK 1.113 billion, down 24%. Revenue from customer contracts slipped 5% to NOK 148 million, while adjusted EBITDA stayed deep in the red at minus NOK 100 million — though that loss narrowed from the prior year’s minus NOK 115 million, helped by cost discipline and better project execution. Net losses also shrank.

The board now faces a potential impairment charge on two idled production lines at the Herøya facility, adding to the NOK 799 million in write-downs already booked in the 2025 financial year. Still, management is pinning its hopes on a new pressurized alkaline electrolyser platform that entered commercial service in early May. Nel says the modular, standardized design can slash capital expenditure by 40% to 60% versus existing market solutions. For a 25-MW plant, the company targets a turnkey system price below $1,450 per kilowatt — roughly half the $3,000 per kilowatt that many industrial projects currently fetch.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nel ASA?

The European Union is backing the industrialization push with up to €135 million from the Innovation Fund, and an €11 million tranche is expected in the second quarter. Nel plans initial production capacity of 1 GW per year at Herøya, scalable to 4 GW. Yet the sell side remains unmoved. Berenberg’s James Carmichael trimmed his target to NOK 2.30 from NOK 2.60, citing the persistent weakness in order intake. The consensus of 11 analysts tracked by the market gives a median target of NOK 2.12, and all seven analysts surveyed by one poll rate the stock a sell.

Meanwhile, the equity itself tells a conflicting story. At €0.30, Nel shares have surged 59% year-to-date, nearly 50% above the 200-day moving average. The relative strength index sits at 16 — a reading that screams technical overextension and typically precedes a pullback. The strong positive momentum over the past 30 days (a 40% gain) has created a conspicuous gap between market sentiment and analyst conviction.

The next hard test arrives on July 15, 2026, when Nel publishes its half-year results. By then, the new platform must begin converting customer conversations into signed contracts. If the order intake shows no sign of life, the disconnect between the stock’s rally and the company’s fundamentals will become even harder to sustain.
