The Swiss train manufacturer Stadler Rail is accelerating its expansion plans following a recovery year in 2025, targeting sales exceeding 5 billion Swiss francs. This push is underscored by a record order backlog and plans to create a thousand new jobs. However, a detailed examination of the company's financial performance reveals a more complex narrative.

Financial Performance: A Mixed Report Card

In 2025, the company's revenue advanced by 13 percent to reach 3.7 billion Swiss francs. New orders, totaling 6.1 billion francs, surpassed market expectations. This achievement is notable considering the loss of a major Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) contract to competitor Siemens. Yet, the firm's operational result and margin fell slightly short of analyst forecasts. The net profit figure missed projections by a more significant margin. Shareholders will receive an increased dividend of 0.50 francs per share, up from a sharply reduced payout of 0.20 francs the previous year, though this adjustment also remained below what the market had anticipated.

Strategic Expansion and Investment

To meet rising demand, Stadler is implementing concrete strategic measures. A new aluminum welding facility in Salt Lake City will increase the local value-added content for US projects to over 70 percent, a direct strategic move in response to American tariff policies. At its Berlin site, employees have agreed to extended working hours to secure the location's future. Recent contract wins, such as an order for 132 light rail vehicles for Cologne's transport operator worth approximately 700 million euros, help ensure strong capacity utilization. The company has budgeted 250 million francs for production capacity expansion in 2026.

This expansion is also reflected in workforce growth. After adding roughly 2,000 positions last year, Stadler plans to create an additional 1,000 jobs in 2026, with 200 to 300 of those located in Switzerland.

Persistent Structural Pressures

Despite this growth trajectory, two significant structural challenges continue to weigh on the group. Chief Financial Officer Raphael Widmer anticipates that net working capital will remain negative in 2026, with net financial debt having recently increased. Furthermore, the company has been waiting for years for the call-off of a further tranche of over 1,000 cars as part of the major Berlin S-Bahn project. This project represents Europe's largest procurement procedure for local public transport, with a total volume of around 15 billion euros. Stadler's management expects the call-off to occur by the end of 2026.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Stadler Rail?

Market sentiment reflects a degree of skepticism. According to UBS analysis, Stadler shares are among the equities with the highest level of short-selling interest. Currently trading at around 21.30 euros, the share price sits roughly 13 percent below its 52-week high. A key question for the current year is whether the Annual General Meeting on May 5 will solidify investor confidence in the new leadership team.

Looking to the medium term, the company is targeting an EBIT margin of 6 to 8 percent. The initial goal for 2026 is to first achieve a margin exceeding 5 percent.
