Citi analysts reassess Micron as AI efficiency tech and pricing shifts create a complex landscape, but long-term contracts and HBM expansion signal strong fundamentals.

The memory chip sector is experiencing a period of significant transition, and Micron Technology finds itself at the center of this evolution. While insatiable demand for high-performance artificial intelligence chips continues, emerging pressures are creating a complex landscape for the company and its investors. These developments have prompted a notable reassessment from financial analysts at Citi.

Strategic Contracts and the Efficiency Paradox

In response to market volatility, Micron and its peers are increasingly focusing on long-term supply agreements. The industry is actively negotiating strategic contracts with key customers, spanning three to five years. These deals are designed to lock in baseline volumes, secure prepayments, and provide greater pricing stability, offering a buffer against the fluctuations of the spot market.

A primary concern for investors has been a discernible shift in pricing dynamics. According to Citi analyst Atif Malik, spot prices for standard DDR5 DRAM products have declined by approximately 6% since the company's last quarterly report. This prompted the bank to reduce its price target on Micron shares by 17% to $425, though it maintained its Buy rating.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron?

Adding to the near-term uncertainty is the introduction of new AI efficiency technology. Google's "TurboQuant" compression technique, unveiled in late March, sparked investor worries that it could reduce the amount of memory required per computing unit. Citi analysts, however, view these concerns as overstated. Historical precedent suggests that gains in cost efficiency typically fuel more intensive usage, ultimately driving higher aggregate demand for memory.

Billion-Dollar Bets on AI-Driven Growth

Despite a recent pullback in its share price—currently trading around €291.80, roughly 27% below its 52-week high—Micron's core business fundamentals appear robust. The company is making substantial operational moves to compete in the lucrative High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) arena, a critical battleground against rivals like SK Hynix.

Management has outlined a clear expansion strategy backed by concrete steps:
* Raising its projected capital expenditure (CapEx) for 2026 to over $25 billion.
* Achieving full allocation of its HBM production capacity for 2026 using the current HBM3E technology.
* Planning to commence production of next-generation HBM4E chips in the second half of 2026, targeting Nvidia's upcoming Vera Rubin platform.

The company's strong quarterly revenue guidance of $18.7 billion underscores a healthy fundamental backdrop. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra has noted that the supply-demand gap in the DRAM segment is currently at historically high levels. The planned ramp-up of HBM production in late 2026 is positioned as a central pillar for capturing ambitious AI sector revenue targets and addressing persistent supply shortages.
