A flurry of software and hardware updates in mid-2026 is reshaping how professionals manage multiple screens, colour fidelity and system security. At the forefront, the HDMI 2.2 standard promises bandwidth up to 96 GBit/s, enabling resolutions as high as 16K or 4K at 240 Hz. Chip makers plan to deliver first samples in 2026, with commercial products expected in 2027 — pushing desktop infrastructure requirements even higher.

Microsoft is preparing Windows 11 26H2 for release in autumn 2026. Delivered as a slim Enablement Package (eKB), it focuses on system maintenance and stability without changing hardware requirements. Support extends to October 2028 for Home and Pro editions, and to October 2029 for Enterprise. Meanwhile, a beta update (Build 26220.8690) fixes crashes in virtual machines and games. The company also rolled out a redesigned Feedback Hub to streamline communication between users and developers.

Yet not everything runs smoothly. After the June 2026 patch cycle — which set a record with over 200 security holes fixed — a glitch in Windows’ Recycle Bin was reported. Instead of file names, internal system identifiers now appear. The patch volume underscores the need for continuous system maintenance.

On the Linux side, KDE Plasma 6.7, released in mid-June, introduces a long-awaited feature: virtual desktops that can be managed individually per monitor. Previously, switching a virtual desktop affected all connected screens globally, breaking multitasking flow. The update also improves colour accuracy, allowing simultaneous use of ICC profiles and HDR output — critical for photo editing, video work and design. Classic design elements like Oxygen and Air have been modernised. The upcoming version 6.8 has already been announced as a pure Wayland desktop.

Ubuntu joined the race on June 19, 2026, with its long-term support release 26.04 LTS. It runs GNOME 50 and integrates more Rust-written system components to boost stability and security of core tools — a move that strengthens the reliability of enterprise workstations.

HDR support is spreading into specialised software. Godot 4.7, also released June 19, implements HDR under Linux via Wayland, as well as for Windows and macOS. SteamOS 3.8 improves external monitor connectivity with Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and HDR over HDMI, reduces input latency, and optimises compatibility with docking stations and third-party hardware.

For high-performance visualisations, the Christie Spyder-S update 6.1 adds scaling capabilities that now support over 200 million pixels on a single canvas, and integrates DisplayPort 1.4 for resolutions up to 8K at 60 Hz. Taken together, these developments point to a year where display flexibility and security resilience are no longer optional — they are expected.
