MSCI World ETF Sees Historic Shift as US Equity Allocation Declines
03.03.2026 - 00:24:46 | boerse-global.deA significant rebalancing of the iShares MSCI World ETF (URTH) took effect on March 2, 2026, marking a notable departure from recent trends. For the first time in years, the weighting of US equities within the fund has decreased. This adjustment is also the final one scheduled before a fundamental methodology overhaul in May, which analysts anticipate will trigger substantially larger portfolio shifts.
Anticipating Greater Change in May
The most consequential changes are still on the horizon. A new free-float calculation logic, set for implementation in May, is expected to generate significantly higher turnover than the current one-sided turnover of 0.3%. This methodological shift could meaningfully alter the weightings of individual mega-cap stocks. While leadership from heavyweights like Nvidia (5.47%), Apple (4.53%), and Microsoft (3.58%) will persist, the new rules are predicted to introduce more movement into the index's composition than the present rebalancing.
Index provider MSCI deliberately limited the scope of this week's changes. The aim was to avoid triggering unnecessary "reverse turnover" ahead of the planned rule reform in May. Furthermore, a controversial decision regarding companies holding significant cryptocurrency assets on their balance sheets has been postponed. Instead of implementing a blanket removal, MSCI has announced a broader market consultation to determine the future treatment of such positions.
Composition Changes and Market Activity
The technical implementation occurred at market close on February 27, with the new composition officially active since Monday. On a net basis, the MSCI World Standard Index shrank by nine constituents, with 18 additions and 27 deletions.
US securities were particularly impacted. With only eight new entrants and 15 removals, the balance shifted away from American stocks for the first time in several years. Major new additions include AST SpaceMobile A, Coherent Corp, and FTAI Aviation—companies focused on AI hardware, satellite communications, and aviation.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying MSCI World ETF?
Notable deletions from the index encompass US-based DocuSign, Japan’s Tokyo Metro and Trend Micro, and the French payment service provider Edenred.
The ETF currently holds 1,320 securities and carries a total expense ratio of 0.24%. Elevated trading volume of 486,410 shares recently—well above the average of 279,650—suggests institutional investors have already been adjusting their positions in anticipation of these changes.
