MP Materials Shares Surge on Strong Start to the Year

The US-based rare earths producer MP Materials has entered 2026 with significant momentum. Following a phenomenal rally last year, investors continue to back the company’s strategic importance to Western supply chains, despite mixed technical signals and recent insider selling activity. The key question now is whether the stock can establish a sustainable base after its fourth-quarter correction.
This optimism was highlighted by a notable price surge on Friday, with shares advancing 8.9% to $55.01 on trading volume well above the daily average. This jump builds on a spectacular performance in 2025, during which the stock’s value more than tripled. However, the current price remains substantially below the October peak of over $100, and the equity continues to face resistance near its 50- and 200-day moving averages.
The investment thesis for MP Materials is heavily supported by transformative partnerships that stabilize its business model. A $500 million supply agreement with Apple, coupled with substantial investment from the Pentagon, provides long-term revenue visibility. A guaranteed minimum price of $110 per kilogram for neodymium-praseodymium oxide, secured through the US Department of Defense, offers crucial predictability in a volatile commodity market.
Operationally, the company is delivering. The third quarter of 2025 saw a new production record of 721 tonnes of neodymium-praseodymium oxide. Progress on vertical integration is further evidenced by the ongoing expansion of facilities in Fort Worth.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying MP Materials?
Wall Street Maintains Bullish Outlook
Market experts on Wall Street are providing considerable support. A strong majority of analysts rate the stock as either a “Strong Buy” or a “Buy.” Financial institutions including Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan have issued price targets in the range of $71 to $74, while DA Davidson sees potential for the equity to reach $82.
Recent Q3 results provided fundamental backing for this optimism. Although revenue was impacted by a strategic halt in concentrate sales to China, the adjusted loss per share of $0.10 was notably better than feared. Management has forecast a return to profitability for Q4 2025, citing new price guarantees from the US Department of Defense.
Insider Sales Introduce a Note of Caution
Despite the robust strategic positioning, transactions by company executives warrant investor attention. In December, CEO James H. Litinsky and CFO Ryan Corbett sold stock packages worth over $26 million. In total, insiders disposed of shares valued at $43.5 million during the last quarter.
The immediate focus for shareholders is whether the company will confirm its projected profitability in the upcoming quarterly report. The next major test for management will be the commissioning of new facilities for heavy rare earths separation in mid-2026. Success here is viewed as critical to justifying market confidence and closing the valuation gap to the stock's all-time high.
