Mkango Flips the Switch on Rare Earth Recycling in Germany

Mkango Resources transforms into a producer with its HyProMag rare earth magnet recycling facility in Germany, targeting scale-up to 750 tonnes annually amid EU supply chain push.

Mkango Resources has crossed a critical threshold, transforming from an exploration company into an operational producer with the commercial launch of its rare earth magnet recycling facility in Pforzheim, Germany. The plant, run by subsidiary HyProMag, marks a tangible step in Europe’s push to secure its own supply of strategic metals.

The Pforzheim operation uses a patented hydrogen-based process to recover neodymium-iron-boron magnets from scrap. These components are essential in electric motors, wind turbines, and a host of other clean-energy technologies. Initial capacity stands at 100 tonnes per year, but the company already has its sights set on scaling up to 750 tonnes annually.

That expansion is backed by more than just ambition. The project sits squarely within a bilateral UK-German government agreement on critical raw materials, giving it political momentum at a time when Europe is racing to reduce dependence on overseas suppliers. Mkango reported cash holdings of $3.1 million for the 2025 financial year, providing the financial runway to push ahead with its recycling strategy.

While many competitors are still raising capital for mine development, Mkango is already processing material on the ground in Germany. The company is betting that closed-loop recycling will offer a faster, more sustainable alternative to traditional mining. With global demand for magnet materials and cobalt expected to surge by 2050, the timing could prove decisive.

For now, the market’s focus is on execution. Investors will be watching how quickly Mkango can ramp up throughput at the Pforzheim site. The facility has become the operational heart of the company’s strategy, and its ability to scale will determine whether this recycling model can deliver the independence Europe is chasing.
