Microsoft's Strategic Pivot: A New Licensing Era Amid Share Price Pressure
05.04.2026 - 07:15:10 | boerse-global.de
Microsoft finds itself at a strategic crossroads. The technology giant is launching its most significant licensing overhaul in ten years, even as its share price has retreated by more than 23% since its last quarterly report. The newly introduced Microsoft 365 E7 tier is designed to achieve what two years of dedicated sales efforts could not: widespread adoption of its AI capabilities.
Financial Performance Contrasts with Market Valuation
The company's operational strength presents a stark contrast to the recent weakness in its stock. In the most recent quarter, revenue climbed 17% to $81.3 billion, with operating income jumping 21%. The Azure cloud platform saw impressive growth of 39%. Furthermore, cash flow from operations for the second quarter of fiscal year 2026 surged 60% to reach $35.8 billion.
Despite these robust fundamentals, the equity has been under pressure. Currently trading near €324, the shares are only about 5% above their 52-week low. The stock's price sits more than 20% below its 200-day moving average, a technical level not seen since 2023.
The E7 Bundle: Packaging AI for Enterprise Adoption
On March 9, 2026, Microsoft announced the Microsoft 365 E7 license, marking the first new Enterprise tier since E5 was introduced in 2015. It will be available for purchase through Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) channels starting May 1, 2026.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Microsoft?
The commercial logic behind E7 is transparent. Despite a major marketing push, only approximately 3% of Microsoft's 450 million commercial 365 users have purchased Copilot as a standalone add-on. The E7 package bundles M365 E5, Microsoft 365 Copilot, the Entra Suite, and the new Agent 365 for $99 per user per month. Purchasing these components separately (even without Agent 365) already amounts to the same cost, effectively making the AI agent layer a complimentary addition with E7.
This bundling strategy transforms Copilot from an optional tool into a foundational platform decision for IT departments. Organizations that upgrade to E7 will automatically equip all their users with the AI functionality.
Pricing Adjustments Create a Favorable Wind
Adding further momentum to the E7 rollout, Microsoft is implementing list price increases effective July 1, 2026. The cost for E3 will rise from $36 to $39 per user monthly, while E5 increases from $57 to $60. For enterprises already running E5 alongside separate Copilot licenses, the new E7 package becomes even more financially attractive under the revised pricing structure.
Microsoft at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Whether this dynamic will be reflected in the quarterly results due on April 29 remains uncertain. The company must simultaneously manage rising capital expenditures and macroeconomic headwinds related to tariff uncertainties. The true test for the E7 strategy will begin with the commencement of transactions on May 1.
