Microsoft shares closed Friday's session at 359.55 EUR, capping a weekly surge of nearly 14 percent. This rally, the stock's strongest since 2007, sets a high-stakes stage for the company's third-quarter earnings report due after the market closes on April 29. Investors are looking for concrete signs that the software giant's massive artificial intelligence investments are translating into sustainable revenue.

The recent gains come amid a significant strategic tightening of Microsoft's AI access. Since mid-April, the company has enforced stricter licensing rules, locking unlicensed users within large Microsoft 365 environments out of Copilot functions in applications like Word and Excel. This move marks a decisive step toward monetizing its multi-billion dollar AI investments, signaling that free access to advanced AI tools is over.

Analyst Scrutiny and Diverging Views

All eyes will be on two key metrics in the upcoming report: the growth of the Azure cloud segment and the capital expenditure dedicated to building out AI infrastructure. Bernstein analysts remain bullish, reiterating an "Outperform" rating with a $641 price target. They argue the lag between infrastructure investment and revenue growth is a timing issue, with new capacity typically monetized within six months. They forecast an acceleration in Azure growth for the third and fourth quarters.

Not all share this optimism. BNP Paribas also maintains an "Outperform" rating but notably slashed its price target from $659 to $556. The company has guided for Intelligent Cloud revenue between $34.1 billion and $34.4 billion for Q3. For Azure, it targets constant-currency growth of 37 to 38 percent, a slight deceleration from the 39 percent recorded in the prior quarter.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Microsoft?

Monetization Efforts and Market Expansion

Alongside restricting access, Microsoft is aggressively pursuing broader adoption. New discount tiers in its Cloud Solution Provider program are designed to lower volume discount barriers, specifically targeting the mid-market to make AI tools more affordable for smaller businesses. Bank of America estimates Copilot had roughly 15 million paying users last quarter, representing about 3.5 percent of the commercial Microsoft 365 user base. Internally, Microsoft is said to have met its own ambitious sales targets for the March quarter, with commercial chief Judson Althoff confirming the "aggressive" goals were achieved.

A major product launch could further accelerate this monetization. Starting in May, Microsoft will begin selling Microsoft 365 E7, a new bundle combining M365 E5, Copilot, and additional enterprise tools.

Underlying Challenges and Institutional Support

Despite the weekly rally, the technical picture reveals underlying challenges. The share price, around 360 EUR, remains well below its 200-day moving average of approximately 405 EUR and is still about 23 percent off its 52-week high. Sentiment among analysts is overwhelmingly positive, however. Of 49 covering analysts, 41 recommend a "Strong Buy," four a "Moderate Buy," and four a "Hold."

Institutional surveys provide further backing. Morgan Stanley's CIO poll for Q1 2026 found 32 percent of IT decision-makers expect Microsoft to capture the largest share of incremental AI spending this year. For agentic automation projects, 42 percent plan to use Microsoft.

The company also addressed significant security concerns this week, releasing an update patching 165 vulnerabilities. One actively exploited zero-day flaw in SharePoint was promptly added to the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency's (CISA) catalog of known threats.

The coming week will determine if Microsoft's aggressive push to convert its AI capabilities into profit can justify both its recent rally and its substantial ongoing investments. The earnings call will be a definitive test of market confidence in Satya Nadella's AI roadmap.
