The stock of Micron Technology has catapulted to a historic peak, decisively breaking through the $390 barrier and setting its sights on the $400 level. A powerful combination of forces is driving this ascent: skyrocketing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) memory, exceptional quarterly financial results, and a strategic expansion of manufacturing capacity. Since the start of the year, the share price has already appreciated by 38%.

A significant catalyst for the recent price surge was the company's fiscal first-quarter report. Micron announced revenue of $13.6 billion, representing a substantial 57% increase compared to the prior year. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $4.78, comfortably surpassing analyst projections.

Perhaps even more noteworthy was the forward guidance provided by management. For the current second fiscal quarter, CEO Sanjay Mehrotra is targeting revenue of approximately $18.7 billion, with earnings per share expected to land between $8.22 and $8.62. This forecast significantly exceeds previous consensus estimates and signals an accelerating recovery within the memory chip market.

In a parallel strategic move, Micron disclosed in mid-January the acquisition of a semiconductor fabrication plant in Taiwan from Powerchip Semiconductor for $1.8 billion. This facility is intended to provide an immediate boost to DRAM production capacity—a direct response to what Mehrotra has termed an "unprecedented shortage" of memory chips.

The High-Bandwidth Memory Engine

The core engine propelling Micron's remarkable performance is High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), a technology now deemed essential for AI data centers. Industry reports indicate that Micron's entire HBM production capacity for the 2026 calendar year is already sold out. Major clients, including NVIDIA and AMD, have secured their future supply allocations.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron?

The company has already begun shipping samples of its next-generation HBM4 memory, which achieves speeds of 11 gigabits per second. This technological lead has the potential to further solidify Micron's competitive position against established rivals.

Insider confidence appears strong. In a notable transaction in mid-January, board member Teyin Liu purchased 23,200 shares worth approximately $7.8 million—a substantial vote of confidence at record price levels.

Broad Analyst Approval

The analyst community has responded with widespread endorsement. On January 22, William Blair initiated coverage with an "Outperform" rating, citing an anticipated earnings growth of over 275% across the next two years. Firms including TD Cowen and Stifel had already raised their price targets earlier. Currently, out of 37 analysts covering the stock, 34 maintain a "Buy" or equivalent recommendation.

The market now awaits the next quarterly results, expected in mid-March. This report will be crucial in determining whether Micron can continue to meet its elevated expectations or if the recent rally will transition into a period of consolidation.
