Micron's Options Frenzy: $2.8 Billion in Premiums Signal Unprecedented Demand for Memory Maker

Micron's record $2.8B options volume and HBM4 pre-sales drive 660% stock surge, but overbought signals and insider selling lead to hedging strategies.

The derivatives market around Micron Technology has become a spectacle in its own right. Options premiums worth more than $2.8 billion changed hands by midday on Monday — eclipsing the combined notional volume of ETFs tracking the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100. Implied volatility hit 84, nearly five times the benchmark index, with call buying overwhelmingly dominant. This flurry of leveraged bets underpins a share price that has more than doubled since the start of the year and surged over 80% in the past 30 days, closing at €633.50 on Friday and touching a new 52-week high of €655.10 on Monday.

The frenzy is grounded in a structural shift in how Micron's customers secure memory chips. The entire HBM4 production for calendar 2026 is already sold out under binding contracts. Instead of the traditional quarterly or annual deals, hyperscalers are now locking in supply for three to five years — a move that dramatically reduces the demand volatility that has historically plagued the memory industry. Alphabet, Amazon, Meta and Microsoft have collectively raised their 2026 capital expenditure budgets to roughly $720 billion, with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg explicitly citing rising memory prices as a driver of his company's increased spending.

Behind the contract revolution lie hard operational numbers. In its fiscal second quarter of 2026, Micron reported revenue of $23.9 billion — a 196% year-over-year surge and the fourth consecutive quarterly record. Management is guiding for fiscal third-quarter revenue of around $33.5 billion at gross margins approaching 81%. To meet demand, the company has raised its fiscal 2026 capital expenditure target to more than $25 billion, up from the $20 billion communicated just one quarter earlier, with further billions planned for 2027.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron?

The supply crunch is so acute that even aggressive investment cannot close the gap in the near term. Chief Business Officer Sumit Sadana recently noted that new fabrication plants in Idaho and Taiwan will not contribute meaningful volume until fiscal 2028. Market researcher Gartner expects DRAM prices to rise 125% this year and NAND flash prices to jump more than 230%. Micron currently trades at roughly 11 times forward earnings — a multiple that looks modest relative to the growth trajectory, though the relative strength index at 78 signals overbought conditions.

Some institutional investors are already tempering their exposure. Kevin Simpson, founder and CIO of Capital Wealth Planning, told CNBC that his firm has begun reducing risk through covered-call strategies on roughly one-third of its Micron position, writing call options at a $660 strike and collecting a premium above $32 per contract. Separately, CEO Sanjay Mehrotra sold 40,000 shares in early May at prices between $511 and $545, executed under a pre-arranged 10b5-1 plan established in January with no immediate signal value.

The high absolute share price — up more than 660% over the past 12 months — has revived speculation about a stock split. Micron's last split occurred more than 25 years ago, and while management has made no official announcement, market observers consider a proposal plausible in the coming months as the elevated price level may deter retail investors.

All eyes now turn to May 20, when Micron presents at the J.P. Morgan Technology Conference in Boston. Investors will be listening for updates on HBM allocation, pricing power, and the next wave of capital spending — factors that will determine whether the stock's stellar run can continue without a breather.
