Micron’s New 256GB DDR5 Modules and a $950 Target: The Two Fronts of an AI Memory Gambit
14.05.2026 - 19:22:30 | boerse-global.de
The insatiable appetite of hyperscale data centers is reshaping the memory landscape, and Micron is positioning itself at the center of the transformation. With energy budgets tightening and compute loads soaring, the company is betting on higher-density, more efficient memory to win the next wave of AI infrastructure spending.
On May 12, Micron announced it had begun sampling new 256-gigabyte DDR5 RDIMM modules built on its 1-gamma process technology. The modules deliver transfer speeds of up to 9,200 megatransfers per second and promise to cut power consumption by more than 40 percent compared with configurations using multiple 128GB modules. The advanced three-dimensional stacking technique packs more capacity into each module without requiring major server architecture overhauls — a critical advantage for AI training and high-performance computing, where memory bandwidth near the processor can ease data bottlenecks.
The product news arrived just as Bank of America sharply raised its outlook. Analysts lifted the price target on the stock to $950 from $500, keeping a “Buy” rating. The upgrade reflects a structural shift in the memory market, where supply is no longer growing as flexibly as it once did. The bank’s valuation model now splits Micron into two distinct blocks: roughly $240 a share for AI and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) operations, and about $710 for the traditional DRAM and NAND business. The message is clear — Micron is no longer viewed as a plain vanilla cyclical memory maker.
The market had already been pricing in that narrative. On Wednesday, Micron shares closed above $800 for the first time, finishing at $803.63, a gain of 4.83 percent on the day. By Thursday, the stock was trading slightly lower in Europe, at around €675.90 to €682.50, still reflecting enormous momentum. Over the past 30 days, the shares have advanced roughly 72 percent (the secondary source puts the gain at 73.75 percent, the primary at 72.07 percent — a minor discrepancy attributable to different snapshots). Year to date, the rally stands at 153.72 percent.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron?
The euphoria is grounded in real demand. Cloud giants Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta are pouring hundreds of billions of dollars into AI-related infrastructure. Amazon and Microsoft each have budgets approaching $200 billion, with Alphabet not far behind. Meta has explicitly cited higher memory prices as a driver of its increased spending outlook. Micron’s new DDR5 modules, which target the exact energy and density pain points in these mega data centers, could not have been timed better.
Yet the valuation has stretched. The trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 37.94 is well above the five-year median of 20.72. GuruFocus data suggests the current price is roughly 138 percent above a calculated fair value of $336.93. Insider sales over the past three months have totaled about $52.4 million, a signal that some executives are taking profits. Micron’s market capitalisation has surged past $906 billion.
Operationally, the company delivered earnings per share of $12.20 in its most recent quarter, beating analyst expectations. The next quarterly report is due on June 24, when investors will scrutinise revenue momentum and margins from the data centre segment. Meanwhile, Micron is expanding its manufacturing footprint: a $100 billion mega-fab in New York broke ground in early 2026, and a $24 billion wafer fab is planned in Singapore over the next decade.
Micron at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Bank of America expects the supply-demand ratio in memory to stay below 110 percent through 2028, supporting sustained pricing power. But any faster-than-expected easing in capacity constraints could quickly test the elevated valuation. For now, Micron is threading together a product upgrade, a bullish analyst call and a demand backdrop that shows no signs of cooling.
