Micron Catches a Tailwind from Nvidia as Analysts Race to Raise Targets on Sold-Out HBM Capacity

Micron shares are up 139% YTD, but an oversold RSI and 5% weekly loss signal high expectations. Nvidia's record data-center revenue fuels HBM demand, with analysts raising targets sharply.

The story of Micron’s stock this year is one of momentum colliding with conviction. The shares have surged roughly 139% since January, yet the relative strength index sits just above 36 — technically in oversold territory after a pullback that saw the stock lose 5% in the past week. That tension between a red-hot run and a cooling RSI tells you just how far expectations have come.

The real catalyst arrived on May 20, when Nvidia reported record quarterly revenue of $81.6 billion for its first fiscal quarter of 2026, up 85% year over year. Its data center business alone generated $75.2 billion, a 92% increase. For the current quarter, Nvidia guided around $91 billion. For Micron investors, those numbers are a direct demand signal: every AI server Nvidia ships needs high-bandwidth memory, and Micron is one of the primary suppliers.

The connection goes beyond quarterly correlation. Micron has already sold its entire HBM capacity for 2026, including volumes for the next-generation HBM4 architecture. That pre-commitment removes near-term sales risk and gives the company unusual visibility in an industry long known for violent cyclical swings. On the technology front, Micron is sampling 256-gigabyte DDR5 RDIMM modules built on its 1-gamma process, reaching speeds up to 9,200 MT/s while consuming significantly less power than older modules.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron?

Wall Street has taken note. Several major houses have lifted their price targets sharply in recent weeks, betting the memory upcycle will last multiple years rather than a single spike. Melius Research moved its target to $1,100 from $700, HSBC to $1,100 from $750, and BofA Securities to $950 from $500. Citigroup raised its target to $840 from $425 and expects DRAM prices to climb 40% in the current quarter, with a jaw-dropping 200% year-over-year jump in 2026. Mizuho sits at $800 with an Outperform rating.

The upgrades are grounded in Micron’s latest numbers. In the second fiscal quarter, reported March 18, revenue hit $23.86 billion — more than double the $8.05 billion posted a year earlier. The GAAP gross margin came in at 74.4%, while operating cash flow reached $11.90 billion. For the current third quarter, management is targeting revenue of $33.5 billion and a gross margin near 81%. The cloud memory business unit chipped in $7.75 billion, and the core data center unit added $5.69 billion, together making up the bulk of the revenue mix.

At the current price of around €645, the stock trades roughly 47% above its 50-day moving average, a stretch that historically invites consolidation. Thursday’s gain of 2.51% offered some relief, but the weekly loss of 5.02% shows how quickly sentiment can shift when expectations are already sky-high.

The next real test will come when Micron reports its third-quarter results, providing a hard check on whether the revenue trajectory, HBM utilization, and memory pricing can validate the aggressive analyst targets. For now, Nvidia’s data-center numbers have extended the tailwind. The question is whether the market is pricing Micron as a structural AI infrastructure play or as a cyclical memory supplier that happens to be enjoying a very good run.
