Allianz shares pressed deeper into record territory on Friday, with the stock touching a fresh 52-week high of 425.50 euros before settling at 422.80 euros, as Bankhaus Metzler delivered a resounding vote of confidence. The German brokerage boosted its price target to 454 euros from 420 euros, maintaining a buy recommendation and citing the insurer's operational execution under chief executive Oliver Bäte.

The upgrade rests on two strategic pillars. Metzler points to the ongoing overhaul of Allianz's product portfolio, where the group is shedding older, lower-margin policies in favor of contemporary offerings—a move that analysts say creates headroom for more profitable expansion. Alongside that, the market is increasingly recognizing the company's progress in embedding artificial intelligence across its operations, which Metzler views as a long-term lever for both efficiency gains and cost reduction.

That digital push extends well beyond back-office efficiency. Allianz UK has sharply expanded its coverage for mid-sized brokers, doubling the maximum indemnity limit for property damage and business interruption to 10 million pounds. At the same time, the partnership with JD.com's Joybuy platform continues to deepen in Europe, embedding Allianz insurance for electronics and household appliances directly into the online checkout process. This so-called embedded insurance strategy gives the group access to fresh customer segments at comparatively low acquisition costs.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Allianz?

Shareholders are also benefiting from an aggressive capital return program. On 25 February 2026, the board authorised a new buyback of up to 2.5 billion euros, which kicked off on 13 March. By 3 July, the company had repurchased roughly 3.95 million of its own shares, equivalent to around 60% of the maximum allocated volume. The programme is expected to conclude by the end of the year. Such buybacks mechanically lift earnings per share, and with Allianz's equity base exceeding 65 billion euros and a Solvency-II ratio of 221%, the balance sheet remains well cushioned to sustain them.

Yet the rally's blistering pace has set off technical alarm bells. The 14-day relative strength index stood at 75.5—firmly above the 70 threshold that signals overbought conditions and historically precedes a consolidation or pullback. The stock now trades roughly 7.84% above its 50-day moving average of 392.07 euros and a full 12.35% above the 200-day line at 376.33 euros, underscoring how far price has stretched from its medium-term trends. One cautionary note: as the share price climbed, management's buyback executions moved to higher average prices, suggesting the company itself sees less of a bargain at current levels.

All eyes now turn to 7 August 2026, when Allianz is scheduled to publish its half-year report. The key number is the full-year operating profit target of 17.4 billion euros, with a tolerance band of plus or minus 1 billion. A confirmation or upgrade would likely sustain the upward momentum; a miss—particularly on the combined ratio in property and casualty or on net inflows in asset management—could trigger a sharp reversal, amplified by the stretched technical position.

For the year to date, Allianz shares have gained 8.77%, and Metzler's revised target implies another 7.4% upside from Friday's close. But with the RSI already flashing red and the stock priced for near-perfect execution, the next few weeks will determine whether the record run has legs—or is due for a breather.
