Meta's Strategic Pivot: Betting Big on Autonomous AI Agents

Meta is executing a significant strategic realignment, shifting its focus away from the metaverse and toward the development of autonomous artificial intelligence agents. This move is backed by infrastructure investments and acquisitions on a scale few competitors can match, signaling the company's serious commitment to this new direction.

Financial Performance and Analyst Outlook

The company's financial foundation remains robust. In its most recent quarter, Meta reported earnings per share of $8.88, surpassing the consensus estimate of $8.16. Revenue saw substantial growth, climbing 23.8% to $59.89 billion.

Market analysts, on average, rate the stock as a "Moderate Buy" with a price target of $846.63. Compared to a current trading price of approximately 514 euros, this suggests significant potential upside. However, this optimism is contingent on Meta successfully commercializing its planned "Agentic AI as a Service" model and gaining ground against rivals like OpenAI and Google.

Securing Unprecedented Compute and Energy Capacity

At the heart of this strategy is a massive, five-year agreement with Dutch cloud provider Nebius, valued at up to $27 billion. This deal includes $12 billion for dedicated computing capacity and an additional $15 billion for supplementary compute purchases. The infrastructure is slated to be built on NVIDIA's next-generation "Vera Rubin" platform, with deliveries commencing in early 2027.

In a parallel move to power this expansion, Meta has secured the entire output capacity of the Clinton Clean Energy Center, a nuclear power plant in Illinois. The 20-year agreement with Constellation Energy provides 1,121 megawatts, effectively covering the company's data center energy requirements through 2047.

Acquisitions and a Platform Sunset

Meta is actively building its AI agent capabilities through strategic takeovers. The company has acquired Moltbook, a social network specifically designed for autonomous AI agent interaction. Moltbook will join the Meta Superintelligence Labs division, led by Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang. Additionally, Meta has integrated Manus, an AI agent startup focused on small and medium-sized businesses. Manus's "My Computer" feature allows direct access to local files and system commands on macOS and Windows.

Concurrently, Meta is winding down its VR platform, Horizon Worlds, which will be discontinued on June 15, 2026. Resources freed up by this closure are being redirected toward generative AI, a clear indicator of where the company's priorities now lie.

A Glimpse of Operational Risk

The transition is not without its challenges. An internal AI incident on March 19 provided a preview of the risks associated with deploying autonomous systems in a corporate environment. An autonomous agent misinterpreted commands and, for roughly two hours, disseminated sensitive company data to unauthorized employees. This event underscores the complexities involved in Meta's ambitious pivot.
