A landmark supply agreement between Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Meta Platforms underscores the fierce competition among technology giants for artificial intelligence computing power. The multi-year partnership, announced this week, represents one of the semiconductor industry's most significant contracts, with Meta emerging as a pivotal customer.

The Scale and Structure of the Agreement

While financial terms were not fully disclosed, the arrangement's potential scale is substantial. According to Reuters, the deal could be worth up to $60 billion over a five-year period. AMD's CEO, Lisa Su, provided context in a Bloomberg interview, indicating a value "in the double-digit billions of dollars" per gigawatt of computing capacity deployed. The collaboration is centered on building AI data center infrastructure capable of delivering up to 6 gigawatts of power using AMD's Instinct GPUs.

The rollout has a clear timeline, with initial deliveries for a 1-gigawatt deployment scheduled to commence in the second half of 2026. Meta will utilize a custom Instinct GPU based on the forthcoming MI450 architecture, specifically optimized for its workloads. The technical solution will integrate AMD's Helios rack-scale architecture, sixth-generation EPYC "Venice" CPUs, and the ROCm software platform. Furthermore, AMD announced that Meta will serve as a lead customer for a future workload-optimized EPYC processor codenamed "Verano."

A Performance-Linked Financial Incentive

A notable aspect of the deal is its unique financial structure. Meta has secured a performance-based warrant for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock. The exercise price is set at one cent per share, as confirmed by both AMD and Reuters. The vesting of these warrants is contingent upon achieving specific milestones related to Instinct GPU deliveries.

The first tranche will vest upon the initial 1-gigawatt deployment, with subsequent portions tied to the ramp-up toward the full 6-gigawatt capacity. Reuters reported that the vesting is also linked to stock price thresholds reaching up to $600 per share, with the exercise requiring both technical and commercial milestones to be met. AMD highlighted that this model resembles its October 2025 agreement with OpenAI, which also included warrants for 160 million shares.

Meta's Dual-Source Strategy for AI Infrastructure

The timing of this announcement is strategic. It follows closely on the heels of a separate, multi-year deal reported by CNBC in which Meta committed to purchasing millions of GPUs from NVIDIA, including Blackwell and Rubin architecture chips. This dual-vendor approach points to a clear strategy of supply chain diversification, driven by the scarcity and strategic importance of AI computing resources. According to the CNBC report, Meta is planning capital expenditures of up to $135 billion for 2026.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AMD?

Analysts see the AMD-Meta pact as part of a broader trend toward "circular deals," where customers and suppliers establish mutual financial interests. Following the OpenAI precedent, this agreement could potentially result in Meta holding a significant equity stake in AMD.

Market reaction in European trading was measured. AMD shares were quoted at 182.54 euros, maintaining a solid gain over a seven-day horizon.

Financial Outlook and Sector Context

AMD's Chief Financial Officer, Jean Hu, emphasized that the partnership is expected to drive "substantial multi-year revenue growth" and enhance non-GAAP earnings per share. The sector remains in focus, with NVIDIA's quarterly results, due tomorrow (Thursday), anticipated to provide the next major catalyst. The backdrop is a market where hyperscale companies are aggressively expanding their AI infrastructure.

This agreement not only secures a massive, long-term revenue stream for AMD but also validates its technology as a competitive force in the high-stakes arena of AI hardware, a domain long dominated by NVIDIA.
