A significant fire at a recycling facility in Bristol has triggered a major incident response, as a wave of waste-site blazes continues to hit the UK and international markets.
Fire Crews Battle Overnight Blaze in Bristol
A large fire broke out at the Suez recycling centre on Kings Weston Lane in Avonmouth in the early hours of July 15, 2026. The blaze, reported at 01:32 BST, drew crews from 14 different fire stations. All personnel were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported, but authorities declared a major incident as a smoke plume drifted south across the region.
Police closed Kings Weston Lane between the A403 St Andrews Road and Long Cross to support emergency operations. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
While the cause of the Avonmouth blaze is still under investigation, it highlights how quickly a fire at an industrial site can escalate — and why proper fire safety planning is essential. The Avonmouth blaze is the latest in a series of incidents at waste management sites across the UK. In London, 60 firefighters and eight engines were deployed to Launders Lane in Rainham on the afternoon of July 14 to tackle a fire involving waste piles. Crews from Wennington, Hornchurch and Dagenham worked through the night to control the blaze. By July 15, residents reported continued smoke and ash during a period of high temperatures, voicing concerns over recurring incidents at the site.
In Scunthorpe, an investigation is underway at the Ellgia Waste Management facility on Winterton Road after a fire broke out on the evening of July 13. Six fire engines and a drone were deployed for monitoring. The response was scaled back early on July 14, but crews remained on-site for further inspections.
Fatal Explosion in India and Scrap Fire in South Korea
The global spate of industrial incidents continued on July 14 with a fatal accident in Tamil Nadu, India. A furnace explosion at the Jain Resource Recycling plant in Gummudipoondi killed one worker and injured several others. Operations in the affected section of the plant have been suspended while the company assesses the damage. The Tamil Nadu government announced ex gratia payments of ?2 lakh for the family of the deceased and ?1 lakh for those injured.
In South Korea, a massive fire broke out at the Dongkuk Steel outdoor unloading yard in Incheon on the evening of July 14. The blaze involved a 10,000-ton scrap metal pile and burned for approximately 15 hours. A total of 96 personnel and 39 pieces of equipment were mobilised to contain the fire. Authorities confirmed no casualties, though an investigation into the cause has been launched.
As these incidents show, risks at industrial sites come in many forms — from furnace explosions to scrap metal fires. A thorough risk assessment is your first line of defence against such hazards. Multiple Waste Fires Across the United States
North American waste facilities also reported several incidents on July 14:
- Oregon: A three-alarm fire broke out at the Biomass One facility in White City. The fire was confined to vegetation and wood waste piles, leading to the closure of Avenue G.
- Maryland: In Baltimore County, a fire ignited in a trash pile at the Western Acceptance Facility on Transway Road. One person was treated for smoke inhalation, though the facility remained operational after the flames were brought under control within an hour.
- Nevada: Firefighters contained a blaze at Robison Metal Recycling in Winnemucca. The fire was confined to a debris pile and generated a large black smoke plume, but no evacuations were required.
These incidents come just weeks after a major fire and series of explosions on June 22 involving 700 tonnes of cardboard at a recycling plant in Widnes, Cheshire. That blaze required 20 fire engines and was visible across several regions of the UK.
