Lufthansa Shares Face Headwinds from Regional Conflict and Rising Costs

Lufthansa faces operational and financial strain from Middle East conflict, with airspace closures, costly detours, evacuation flights, and a sharp rise in jet fuel prices impacting its stock.

The escalating conflict in the Middle East is impacting the Lufthansa Group across several critical operational areas, from safety protocols to routine flight schedules. The airline is being forced to implement immediate special measures, including evacuation flights, airspace diversions, and absorbing higher fuel prices, which collectively are increasing cost pressures. The key question for investors is the extent to which these disruptions could hinder flight operations in the coming days.

Fuel Costs Surge, Adding to Financial Strain

Compounding the operational challenges is a sharp increase in energy prices. Market sources indicate that the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has caused a sudden spike, directly translating into more expensive jet fuel. These higher kerosene costs immediately pressure profit margins in an already capital-intensive industry.

This confluence of negative factors has recently been reflected in the company's stock performance. Over the past seven trading days, Lufthansa shares declined by 8.55%, closing at €8.38 on Tuesday. This price also places the equity below its 50-day moving average of €8.84, a technical indicator suggesting the short-term trend is currently bearish.

Airspace Closures Force Route Cancellations and Lengthy Detours

In response to security concerns, the airline group has significantly scaled back its regional flight operations. Lufthansa is avoiding the airspace of Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Dammam, and Iran until at least March 8. Consequently, scheduled passenger services to Tel Aviv, Beirut, Amman, Erbil, Dammam, and Tehran have been suspended for the time being.

Further restrictions are in place through March 6, affecting flights to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, as well as the airspace of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Services to Larnaca and Cypriot airspace are also impacted until March 6. For airlines, such widespread closures typically mean fewer connections, longer flight paths requiring fuel-intensive detours, and more complicated aircraft rotations, all leading to operational inefficiencies.

Evacuation Missions Displace Regular Flight Operations

The volatile situation on the ground has necessitated direct intervention by the airline group. As early as March 1, Austrian Airlines, a Lufthansa subsidiary, used an Airbus A320neo to repatriate stranded crew members from Muscat, Oman, to Vienna. This action was required because flight crews had been grounded in locations including the UAE and Oman since hostilities began. With UAE airports closed to civilian traffic, some personnel had to travel overland from Dubai to Muscat to reach the evacuation flight.

An additional government-chartered evacuation is scheduled for the night of March 4-5. Lufthansa will operate an Airbus A340-300, configured with 279 seats, to transport German citizens from Muscat to Frankfurt. This flight is not available for public booking; registration is being handled exclusively through the German Foreign Office's crisis preparedness list.

The Timeline of Restrictions is Now Crucial

The duration of these disruptions will be a decisive factor. The focus until March 6 remains on the UAE and Cyprus, with the broader set of airspace closures extending until at least March 8. Any extension or expansion of these measures would sustain elevated operational complexity and cost pressure. Conversely, a de-escalation would primarily restore planning certainty for the airline's operations management.
