As Lufthansa marks its centenary, the airline is making decisive moves that will reshape its German operations. A planned multi-billion euro investment is being channeled into expanding its southern hub, a strategic shift that sidelines Frankfurt and presents a significant setback for its rival base.

Expansion Focus Shifts South

The centerpiece of this new strategy is Munich Airport. The carrier, in a joint venture where it retains a 40% stake, is reviving a major expansion project at Terminal 2. The construction of an addition known as the "T-Steg" or "T-stem," initially conceived in 2019 and paused during the pandemic, aims to add capacity for up to ten million passengers annually. CEO Carsten Spohr has indicated that substantial future growth is now only economically viable at one of Germany's two primary hubs, clearly favoring Munich.

Geopolitical Headwinds Dampen Sentiment

Despite the celebratory occasion, the market mood is subdued. Lufthansa shares closed at €7.32 last Friday, reflecting a monthly decline of over 19%. This downward pressure is partly attributed to a recent downgrade by Goldman Sachs. The US investment bank cited unpredictable risks for the aviation sector stemming from tensions in the Middle East. Specifically, the Lufthansa Group has temporarily suspended flights to Dubai and Tel Aviv. These cancellations are weighing on the load factors of its long-haul fleet and creating volatility in fuel cost forecasting.

Operational Mixed Bag

The airline's daily operations present a contrasting picture. On Sunday, an Airbus A350-900 in Denver had to abort its takeoff due to strong tailwinds at high speed. The aircraft remains grounded for technical inspections. Concurrently, the company is bolstering its network from Munich. After a ten-year hiatus, daily nonstop service to Istanbul will resume on March 29, strengthening the hub's connectivity to Turkey.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Lufthansa?

Balancing Act for Management

As the anniversary ceremony proceeds, market observers await concrete details on Lufthansa's announced transformation program. Management faces the complex task of precisely financing the billion-euro Munich expansion. This effort is complicated by ongoing financial pressures from geopolitical flight cancellations and fluctuating kerosene prices, which strain the budget for the group's ongoing fleet modernization.
