Lufthansa's Premium Cabin Rollout Gains Crucial Momentum
08.04.2026 - 00:58:26 | boerse-global.deAfter months of operating with severely restricted capacity, Lufthansa's new Allegris business class cabins are finally nearing full availability. Starting April 15th, the airline will open 25 of the 28 premium seats on its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners for booking, a critical development timed with the peak summer travel season.
A Multi-Million Euro Certification Hurdle
The delay stemmed from a complex certification process that significantly hampered revenue. Since the Dreamliners entered service in October 2025, regulatory constraints limited Lufthansa to selling just four business class seats per flight. This was due to a unique challenge: three separate seat manufacturers supplied components for the Allegris cabin, and each distinct seat type required individual certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for every aircraft model.
Further safety evaluations, including head-impact and evacuation tests between the high-walled suites, extended the timeline. The operational impact was substantial, with the carrier missing out on up to 24 premium ticket sales on each affected flight.
With the bulk of these approvals now secured, the remaining three seats are expected to be cleared shortly. The fully equipped 787-9 aircraft will initially operate from Frankfurt to destinations including Austin, Rio de Janeiro, Bogotá, Cape Town, Shanghai, Hyderabad, and Hong Kong. Services to New York JFK and Los Angeles will be added in June, followed by Delhi in July.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Lufthansa?
A Tiered Premium Product Strategy
The Allegris business class introduces a layered booking model. Passengers can reserve the standard Classic Seat at no additional cost, while enhanced comfort options command a premium. These include the private Business Class Suite, window-side Privacy Seats, and the Extra Long Bed offering 2.2 meters of sleeping space. The cabin has already been experienced by over one million passengers since its initial introduction in summer 2024.
Lufthansa's current fleet includes eight Dreamliners based in Frankfurt, with 21 more on order. The group plans to have 29 of these aircraft in service by the end of 2027, signaling a major expansion in Allegris cabin capacity.
Share Performance Amid Operational Headwinds
This operational progress arrives during a turbulent period for the airline. Since the start of the year, Lufthansa shares have declined by approximately 10.75%. Persistent conflict in the Gulf region continues to pressure both kerosene prices and capacity planning. In response, management is evaluating the temporary grounding of around 40 aircraft from its 800-strong fleet, a move that could lead to short-time work arrangements within its German operations.
Lufthansa at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The equity saw a modest uptick on Tuesday, closing at €7.52, buoyed by a declining oil price. Investors are likely to scrutinize the company's cost strategy closely at the 73rd Annual General Meeting, scheduled for May 12, 2026, in Frankfurt.
