Lufthansa's Fleet Transformation Accelerates with New Allegris Cabin Launch
17.03.2026 - 04:07:52 | boerse-global.de
The operational landscape at Lufthansa is shifting following a significant regulatory milestone. The carrier has finally received official certification for its new "Allegris" Business Class cabin aboard the Boeing 787-9, clearing the way for its commercial debut. The inaugural Dreamliner featuring the revamped interior, christened "Potsdam," commenced service this past Sunday on the Frankfurt to Toronto route.
A Dual-Pronged Fleet Modernization Strategy
This launch triggers a broad rollout phase. Within this week alone, the airline plans to equip eight additional Boeing 787-9 aircraft with the new cabins, each configured with 25 Allegris seats. The product promises lie-flat beds, personalized climate controls, and enhanced privacy dividers, with an optional two-person suite configuration. The company's long-term vision involves expanding its Dreamliner fleet to 29 aircraft by the conclusion of 2027.
Concurrently, a separate upgrade program is underway for the Airbus A380 fleet. Starting in April 2026, the first retrofitted superjumbos will begin operating from Munich to destinations including Boston, Los Angeles, Washington Dulles, and Delhi. These aircraft will feature Thompson Aero Vantage XL seats in a 1-2-1 layout, guaranteeing every passenger direct aisle access. The entire fleet of eight A380s is scheduled to be completed by mid-2027.
Cargo Division Provides a Solid Financial Foundation
Beyond the passenger experience upgrades, Lufthansa's freight business continues to deliver robust operational performance. Lufthansa Cargo reported a 29% increase in its adjusted operating profit for the 2025 financial year, reaching 324 million euros. This growth was primarily driven by an expansion in high-margin specialty transport services for the pharmaceutical, automotive, and semiconductor industries.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Lufthansa?
Network Expansion and Market Perspective
Coinciding with the late-March introduction of the summer flight schedule, Lufthansa will further deploy its Dreamliners on routes to Cape Town, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. Despite these developments, the company's shares currently trade approximately 18% below their 52-week high of 9.50 euros. Market observers note that the fleet renewal alone is unlikely to reverse this trend. The medium-term success of Lufthansa's premium strategy, and its potential to materially improve margins, will become clearer through booking figures for the new Allegris cabins. These will be fully marketable across the network beginning with the summer schedule.
