The Euro Stoxx index is witnessing a powerful rotation into cyclical stocks, with chemical and energy companies dominating the leaderboard. Topping the 30-day momentum ranking is specialty chemicals group Lanxess, posting a staggering 29.5% gain. This surge comes even as the company faces fresh analyst skepticism, highlighting the volatile and contested nature of its current recovery path.

Lanxess shares closed at 17.67 euros, a remarkable 50% recovery from their 52-week low of 11.78 euros hit in March. The broader market appears to be betting on a cyclical upturn, with all five top momentum stocks—Lanxess, Brenntag, ams-OSRAM, Equinor, and Norsk Hydro—posting monthly advances exceeding 20%. This rally has lifted Lanxess despite its stock remaining approximately 39% below its annual high.

However, this bullish momentum faced a stark reality check mid-week. The stock fell about five percent to 17.98 euros on substantial volume of over 570,000 Xetra-traded shares. The decline was triggered by mwb research downgrading Lanxess from "Buy" to "Hold." Analysts cited a persistent cyclical trough, with no significant volume or capacity utilization rebound expected for Q1 2026. Weak end-market demand and volatile energy costs, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, continue to pressure margins.

In a defensive move against these rising costs, Lanxess implemented a global price increase of six to eight percent for its Lewatit ion exchange resins on April 7. This action underscores the tight operational environment. The company's upcoming quarterly report on May 7 will be a critical test. Analysts project a full-year 2026 loss per share of around 0.02 euros, a sharp improvement from the prior year's loss of 4.61 euros per share, but still not a return to profitability.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Lanxess?

Simultaneously, Lanxess is pushing its transformation narrative. At the India Rubber Expo, it unveiled new rubber additives, including a sustainable antioxidant with a 30% reduced CO? footprint. Its Saltigo subsidiary is also preparing to showcase scalable synthesis solutions at Chemspec Europe in May. These innovations signal strategic progress, yet their ability to quickly offset fundamental headwinds is uncertain.

The momentum rally extends beyond Lanxess. Chemical distributor Brenntag follows closely with a 28.9% monthly gain, trading at 58.28 euros. Its business model benefits from normalized supply chains and consolidation in a fragmented market. Austrian sensor specialist ams-OSRAM ranks third, up 24.1% to 9.82 CHF, having nearly doubled from its 52-week low as restructuring efforts take hold.

Energy and materials giants Equinor and Norsk Hydro round out the top five. Equinor has surged 21.7% to 33.99 euros, fueled by strong fossil fuel cash flows and green energy investments. Norsk Hydro, gaining 21.4%, hit a new 52-week high of 9.60 euros, driven by recovering aluminum prices and demand for its renewable energy-powered "green aluminum."

Lanxess at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

This sector-wide surge carries significant volatility. All five top performers exhibit 30-day volatility above 40%, with Lanxess's reading exceeding 95%. The market is clearly pricing in an industrial recovery, but the disconnect between soaring prices and lingering fundamental concerns—exemplified by Lanxess's conflicting signals of high momentum and analyst downgrades—suggests the path ahead will be turbulent. The coming earnings season will determine whether this rally has durable fundamental support or is primed for a sharp correction.
