Klarna's Valuation Puzzle: Record Growth Meets Market Skepticism

Klarna's revenue and user base soar as it pivots to banking, but its stock price languishes far below its IPO level amid legal and market pressures.

The Swedish fintech giant Klarna finds itself in a curious position. Despite smashing revenue records and demonstrating robust operational growth, its stock price languishes far below its initial public offering level. This growing disconnect between the company's business performance and its market valuation is the central dilemma facing investors.

A Strategic Pivot from BNPL to Banking

Klarna is undergoing a deliberate transformation, evolving beyond its core "buy now, pay later" (BNPL) identity into a comprehensive digital bank. This strategic shift is yielding significant results. The number of customers using additional services like cards, savings products, or financing solutions beyond simple payments surged by 101% to reach 15.8 million. This segment is far more valuable, generating approximately $107 in revenue per user compared to the average customer's $30.

The company's app now boasts 55 million monthly active users, with 9 million engaging on a daily basis—a year-over-year increase in daily usage of about 53%. Operational efficiency has also seen dramatic improvement, largely driven by artificial intelligence. Revenue per employee has tripled, reaching $1.24 million.

Stellar Financial Performance in 2025

Klarna's financial results for 2025 tell a story of powerful momentum. For the full year, the company processed a Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV) of $127.9 billion, representing a 22% increase. Revenue climbed 25% to $3.5 billion.

The fourth quarter was particularly strong, with revenue jumping 38% to $1.082 billion, exceeding the company's own forecasts. The U.S. market was a standout performer, where Q4 revenue soared 58% and GMV grew 43%. Klarna's services are now used by roughly 29 million Americans, equating to about 11% of the U.S. population.

Market Valuation and Legal Headwinds

Despite these impressive figures, the stock market has been unimpressed. Klarna debuted on the New York Stock Exchange on September 10, 2025, at $40 per share, already above its initially projected range of $35 to $37. It closed its first trading day at $45.82. Since then, the share price has fallen sharply and currently trades approximately 66% below its 52-week high. Consequently, its market capitalization is now a fraction of the private valuation of over $45 billion it achieved in 2021.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Klarna?

The company also faces legal challenges adding pressure. It is contending with lawsuits alleging it understated provisions for credit losses shortly after its IPO. Furthermore, a significant antitrust case is pending; the Swedish Patent and Market Court is expected to rule on April 15, 2026, in a case brought by Klarna's subsidiary, PriceRunner, against Google.

Strategic Partnerships and the Path to Profitability

On the partnership front, Klarna joined Google's Universal Commerce Protocol in early February 2026. This collaboration, which builds upon existing ties with Google Pay and Google Cloud, is designed to embed Klarna into emerging AI-powered shopping ecosystems.

Looking ahead to 2026, Klarna is targeting continued revenue growth and margin improvement. The company has demonstrated solid risk management, with its credit loss ratio recently declining to 0.65%. The critical question for future stock performance is whether its banking strategy, with its substantially higher revenue per user, can translate into consistent net profitability in the coming quarters.
