Investor attention is fixed on Johnson & Johnson's development pipeline following a significant clinical data release and notable institutional trading activity in the first quarter of 2026. The healthcare giant's shares are trading near a 52-week high of €212.65, having advanced approximately 19% since the start of the year.

Promising Oncology Data Emerges

At the recent European Association of Urology congress, the company unveiled compelling Phase 1 results for its bladder cancer candidate, Erda-iDRS. Targeting a specific form of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer with FGFR alterations, the drug demonstrated an 89% complete response rate within an intermediate-risk patient group. The median duration of response was reported as 18 months. These early-stage findings provide a robust foundation for the ongoing Phase 3 MoonRISe trial, which Johnson & Johnson is actively advancing.

Mixed Results Across Therapeutic Areas

While the oncology news was positive, the outlook for another pipeline asset is less clear. Developed in partnership with Contineum Therapeutics, the M1 inhibitor PIPE-307 failed to meet both its primary and secondary endpoints in the Phase 2 VISTA trial for relapsing multiple sclerosis last November. The collaboration continues, with focus now shifting to an ongoing Phase 2 study investigating the drug's efficacy in major depressive disorder. Data from this depression trial is anticipated by mid-2026.

Institutional Holdings See Significant Adjustments

Substantial movement occurred among major investors during Q1 2026. Bank of Nova Scotia dramatically increased its stake by 108.8%, bringing its total holding to over 1.6 million shares. Conversely, other institutional players including Calydon Capital and Chevy Chase Trust Holdings reduced their positions during the same period. Overall, institutional ownership remains a stable cornerstone, representing about 69.6% of the company's outstanding shares.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Johnson & Johnson?

For now, the bladder cancer candidate stands as the most potent near-term catalyst from Johnson & Johnson's research portfolio. Market participants will be watching to see if the upcoming PIPE-307 depression data, expected this summer, can provide the next positive momentum for the equity.
