A powerful combination of sector-wide optimism and company-specific financial strengthening has propelled shares of hydrogen specialist ITM Power to extraordinary weekly gains. The stock skyrocketed more than 40% in a single session on April 17, closing the week up approximately 86% to finish at 131.50 pence. This rally marks a significant departure from its trading range earlier in the year, which saw lows around 27 pence.

The surge is partly fueled by a macroeconomic shift placing hydrogen electrolysis at the center of a new energy demand story. The massive power requirements of artificial intelligence data centers are pushing operators to seek constant, carbon-neutral energy sources. This emerging demand perspective has benefited the entire sector, with peers like Nel ASA, Plug Power, and Bloom Energy also posting notable gains.

Concurrently, ITM Power has solidified its financial foundation. In early April, the company secured a major state-backed investment package. Great British Energy is investing £40 million directly, supplemented by a £46.5 million government grant pending final confirmation from the Department for Energy. This capital injection, aimed at building an automated production line for its Chronos electrolyser in Sheffield, boosts the firm's year-end cash position to an estimated £210-215 million—roughly £40 million above prior plans.

The Chronos system is central to ITM Power's strategy, designed to require 50% fewer components than its predecessor, Trident, and double the power density to 2.5 MW/m². The goal is to achieve a nameplate capacity of one gigawatt by 2028.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ITM Power?

Supporting this operational push, the company's leadership team has been granted long-term incentive plan (LTIP) share awards for the period to April 2025. CEO Dennis Schulz receives 906,238 shares, CFO Amy Grey 362,495, and CTO Simon Bourne 543,742. Schulz was also granted a separate performance-linked award of 1.3 million shares, tied to delivering profitable contracts, developing the Hydropulse product, and the successful rollout of Chronos over three years.

Analyst sentiment is turning more positive. Berenberg raised its price target on the stock from 100p to 110p, maintaining a buy recommendation. The upgrade follows improved revenue guidance; ITM Power now expects £40-43 million in sales for the full 2026 financial year, up from a previous range of £35-40 million. The first half of FY2026 already set a record with £18 million in revenue.

Geopolitical tensions are adding further tailwinds. Rising oil prices, with Brent crude climbing to $96.25 a barrel and WTI to $87.88 due to disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, are painfully highlighting dependencies on fossil fuels. This accelerates global investment in decentralized energy systems, from a 7.4 GWh storage project in Inner Mongolia to new large-scale battery farms in Scotland. In the US, battery storage is projected to constitute over 25% of all new power generation capacity installed this year, representing growth of about one-third.

ITM Power at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Despite the revenue progress, profitability remains a challenge. The pre-tax loss for the year to April 2025 widened to £45.4 million from £27.1 million a year earlier, illustrating that growth and losses are currently running in parallel. The market's dramatic re-rating now hinges on whether operational execution can match the soaring sentiment. Concrete new orders or capacity expansions will be the necessary signals to transform this momentum-driven rally into a fundamental reassessment of the company's value.
