ITM Power raises FY revenue guidance to £40-43M after record H1 of £18M; stock at 170p near 175-180p resistance. EU hydrogen subsidies and UK state backing provide catalysts, but competition and macro headwinds loom.

ITM Power has given investors a rare dose of concrete financial progress, raising its full-year revenue guidance to between £40 million and £43 million after posting a record first-half take of £18 million. The upward revision, representing a roughly 35 percent jump from the prior year, signals that the PEM electrolyser specialist is finally turning project pipeline promises into hard cash. Yet the stock’s ability to hold recent gains will also depend on a wave of external catalysts — from a €1.3 billion EU hydrogen subsidy programme to a pending index entry.

The company’s shares closed on 22 May at around 170p, up six percent on the day, after touching an intraday high of 172p. That leaves the stock just 5.5 percent shy of its 2026 peak of 179.50p, reached on 7 May. The 175p?to?180p zone now emerges as the key resistance band. On the downside, Friday’s low of 152.90p provides the first line of support, with a sustained break below the prior close of 160p likely to sap confidence in the breakout attempt.

Government Cash and Industrial Backing

The sector backdrop is shifting in ITM’s favour. The European Commission recently approved €1.3 billion in German state aid earmarked for renewable hydrogen, targeting up to 1,000 MW of electrolyser capacity. That follows the third auction of the European Hydrogen Bank, which allocated roughly €1.09 billion for almost 1.1 GW of capacity. Closer to home, Great British Energy has injected £40 million of equity into ITM as part of an £86.5 million state package designed to accelerate domestic hydrogen production and industrial decarbonisation.

On the industrial front, ITM is deepening its collaboration with Rheinmetall on the “Giga PtX” project, which aims to scale large hydrogen solutions for heavy industry. Partnerships such as these are critical in a market where technology alone is insufficient; securing bankable offtake agreements and manufacturing capacity is what separates winners from laggards.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ITM Power?

Competition Heats Up

The competitive landscape is intensifying. At the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam, Samsung E&A and Nel Hydrogen unveiled a joint 100?MW alkaline solution, while Hystar presented a 20?MW PEM system. For ITM, staying competitive on cost and scale remains a constant challenge, particularly as larger rivals target the same gigawatt-scale opportunities.

Macro Headwinds and a Quiet Corporate Calendar

With no earnings calls or shareholder meetings scheduled for the week starting 25 May, the stock’s near-term trajectory will be driven by macro forces. The UK composite PMI slid from 52.6 to 48.5 in May, slipping below the growth threshold, while price pressures intensified. That is an uncomfortable backdrop for a richly valued growth stock whose valuation is sensitive to interest rate expectations. The Bank of England holds no rate decision this week, but Governor Andrew Bailey speaks on Friday in Reykjavik and Director Sarah Breeden on Thursday in London — both events could shift rate?path sentiment.

Analyst Conviction and the Index Catalyst

Wall Street is broadly constructive: seven analysts rate ITM a buy, three a hold and two a sell. Morgan Stanley, however, cautions that sustained profitability is unlikely before 2028, underscoring the central tension — fast?growing revenues must eventually translate into reliable margins. The stock’s 265 percent rally over the past twelve months has already priced in considerable optimism.

ITM Power at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

A structural demand boost could come from index inclusion. ITM is expected to join the MSCI UK Small Cap Index in May 2026, a move that typically forces passive funds to accumulate the stock, lifting liquidity and visibility. That event, combined with the raised guidance and state backing, gives the company powerful narrative momentum. The immediate test, however, remains technical: the 160p?to?170p support zone must hold for the assault on the annual high to remain credible.
