ITM Power Joins the Billion-Pound Club After a Meteoric Run
27.04.2026 - 19:52:37 | boerse-global.deThe Sheffield-based electrolyser manufacturer has crashed through the £1 billion valuation barrier, marking a stunning reversal of fortune for a stock that was trading at penny levels just over a year ago. ITM Power’s market capitalisation hit approximately £1.07 billion on Monday, with shares opening at 161.00 pence after closing at 154.80 pence on Friday. The milestone comes barely a month after the stock was changing hands at around 62 pence in late March — a gain of more than 150 percent in under four weeks.
The rally has been nothing short of vertiginous. At one point on 27 April, the shares touched 166.50 pence, a multi-year high that has left even the most bullish analysts scrambling to keep up. Yet the speed of the ascent has triggered technical warning lights. The Relative Strength Index has surged to 86.89, deep into overbought territory, while the current price sits roughly 100 percent above both the 50-day and 200-day moving averages. Market observers are flagging the possibility of a near-term pullback, even if the broader trend remains firmly intact.
State Backing and a 20-Gigawatt Pipeline
The revaluation rests on a powerful combination of government support and commercial momentum. ITM Power confirmed earlier this month that the state-owned Great British Energy Group had invested £40 million, securing a 10 percent stake in the company. That was supplemented by a £46.5 million grant from the UK’s energy ministry. The cash injections have transformed the company’s financial standing, with management now guiding for year-end cash reserves of £210 million to £215 million — up sharply from the previous forecast of £170 million to £175 million.
On the commercial front, the company is pursuing a project pipeline of roughly 20 gigawatts. A flagship initiative is the “Giga PtX” partnership with Rheinmetall, which aims to build a decentralised network of 50-megawatt electrolyser plants producing synthetic fuels for NATO forces across Europe. The order book currently stands at £152 million worth of projects, and management expects revenue of up to £43 million for the current financial year, underpinned by improved project execution and a growing backlog.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ITM Power?
From Lab to Factory Floor
The fresh capital is earmarked for a new fully automated manufacturing line in Sheffield, designed to produce one gigawatt of capacity and dedicated to the next-generation “Chronos” electrolyser. ITM Power remains loss-making at the operating level, but the strengthened balance sheet gives it the runway to complete the transition from a research-driven enterprise to an industrial-scale manufacturer. That transition is precisely what the market is betting on.
Trading volumes have surged in parallel with the share price, with more than 16 million shares changing hands daily — well above historical averages and a clear signal of renewed institutional interest. The stock’s 52-week low of just 30 pence now seems a distant memory.
Analysts Remain Divided
Despite the operational progress, the analyst community is far from unanimous. Berenberg Bank rates the stock a “Buy” with a price target of 110 pence, while UBS Group sits at “Neutral” with a target of just 60 pence. The consensus stands at “Moderate Buy” with an average target of 95 pence — meaning the shares are currently trading well above even the most optimistic published forecasts.
ITM Power at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The path to profitability remains the central challenge. ITM Power reported a first-half loss per share of £0.023, which beat market expectations by more than 90 percent but still leaves the company firmly in the red. Analysts expect a full-year loss as the company invests heavily in expanding its production capacity globally. For now, however, the market appears willing to look past the red ink and focus on the strategic transformation unfolding in Sheffield.
