JPMorgan has placed IREN on its list of the top 25 short ideas for the third quarter of 2026, cementing a bearish stance on the AI cloud and bitcoin mining operator. Yet the market’s reaction was anything but panicked: the stock slipped just 1.54% to €36.01 on Friday, a muted response that belies the intensity of the sell recommendation. Options flow told a different story, with traders piling into bearish positions even as the shares only edged down 0.34% on the day JPMorgan reaffirmed its Sell rating.

The bank’s analysts see a double dose of pressure on IREN’s core business. Rents for graphics-processing units are sliding as new capacity floods the market, but the more disruptive threat comes from Meta. The social media giant is reportedly planning to market its own surplus AI computing power, a move that would turn one of the sector’s biggest customers into a direct competitor. That prospect has already hammered shares of IREN, CoreWeave and Nebius, and JPMorgan argues the damage is far from over.

IREN’s recent slide – 19.26% over the past month – has been aggravated by internal turmoil. The company’s chairman waded into a controversy over a stock package for the founders, adding to the nervous mood. Macro headwinds from the crypto world also weighed: software group Strategy posted an $8.3 billion loss tied to bitcoin sales, souring sentiment across the digital-asset ecosystem.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?

Technically, the stock is in a precarious spot. At €36.01 it sits 23.30% below its 50-day moving average of €46.95 and 14.76% under the 200-day average of €42.25. The 14-day relative strength index of 38.5 is hovering just above oversold territory, while annualized 30-day volatility of roughly 90% underscores how abruptly the sector can change direction. On a brighter note, the shares have stabilised in the past week, losing only 0.95%.

The longer-term picture is a study in contrasts. IREN has shed 47.51% from its 52-week high of €68.61 set on 3 November 2025, but it still stands 147.22% above where it traded a year ago – a reflection of the company’s re-rating from a pure bitcoin miner to an AI infrastructure play. Year-to-date, however, the stock is nearly flat at minus 1.26%, showing that the bullish momentum has drained away.

JPMorgan’s short call is not the only voice on the Street. Some analysts have pushed back on the Meta threat, arguing that the tech giant’s entry may not gut the specialised AI cloud market. The tug-of-war between bears fixated on GPU pricing and bulls banking on IREN’s transformation will likely persist until the next major catalyst: third-quarter earnings due on 16 September. Until then, the trajectory hinges on what happens to GPU lease rates and whether Meta’s cloud ambitions become more concrete.
