IonQ's Record Backlog and 755% Revenue Growth Can't Stop the Bleeding: Options Market Bets on More Pain

The quantum computing company IonQ is living a tale of two realities. On one side, the business is posting its best-ever numbers: first-quarter GAAP revenue hit a record $64.7 million, a 755% surge from a year earlier, while its order backlog swelled 554% to $470 million. On the other, the stock has been obliterated, shedding 58.23% from its October 2025 peak of $73.10 and closing Friday at just $30.54 — a level not seen in months. The disconnect between operational momentum and market punishment is, by any measure, extreme.
The sell-off has been relentless. Over the past week alone, IonQ shares lost 18.71%, and the monthly decline stands at 36.14%. The carnage accelerated through mid-July, when the stock fell for eight consecutive sessions, erasing roughly $4.1 billion in market value. At the heart of the pressure is a cocktail of investor anxiety: a critical short-seller report that questions the sustainability of IonQ's growth and its reliance on Pentagon-linked contract financing, coupled with the Nasdaq debut of European rival IQM Quantum Computers, which siphoned attention and capital from the sector. The broader debate over valuation — IonQ still trades at a price-to-sales multiple near 85 to 92 despite an upgraded revenue forecast — has only grown louder.
Options traders are bracing for worse. The put-call ratio has climbed far above normal, with heavy volume concentrated in put contracts at the $40 strike. Implied volatility has risen into the upper quartile of its 52-week range, meaning hedges against further downside are costing a premium. The pattern held firm in the prior week, when the stock fell 12.30% and puts consistently outpaced calls. The market is effectively pricing in the possibility of another sharp move when IonQ reports second-quarter results in early August. Analysts, for their part, expect revenue of roughly $66.5 million.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IonQ?
Behind the bearish sentiment, the company's financial health offers a counter-narrative. CEO Niccolo de Masi described the first quarter as the fourth consecutive record quarter and noted that actual sales came in 30% above the midpoint of IonQ's own guidance. Commercial customers now account for 60% of revenue, with 35% from international clients and 35% from multi-product buyers. That progress, however, comes at a cost: operating losses totaled $271.5 million in the quarter, and adjusted EBITDA was negative $96.8 million. Full-year adjusted EBITDA is forecast to land between a loss of $310 million and $330 million, widening from the $186.75 million loss in 2025. IonQ does have ample runway — $3.1 billion in cash and equivalents at the end of March — but the burn rate is accelerating.
Technical indicators underscore just how brutal the drop has been. The 14-day relative strength index sits at 25.7, firmly in oversold territory, and the annualized 30-day volatility has hit 70.06%. The stock now trades well below both its 50-day moving average of $47.42 and its 200-day average of $41.26. Still, Wall Street analysts remain largely bullish. The consensus price target is $71.25, implying upside of more than 60% from current levels. Northland Securities raised its target from $55 to $70 in late June, betting that IonQ will showcase its "Broad Quantum Advantage" at an investor day in September.
Amid the turbulence, the company has not paused its technology push. IonQ recently announced a two-year research partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute and FormationQ to model the complex behavior of chimpanzees and bonobos using its trapped-ion quantum platform. Such projects underline its technical lead in the field, but for now, market sentiment is dictated more by risk appetite than by innovation. The upcoming second-quarter report will be the next major test — and with options markets positioned for fireworks, the summer direction of IonQ's stock hangs squarely on whether the numbers can finally drown out the noise.
