Intel’s 18A Yield Breakthrough Fuels Apple Speculation and a Wall Street Valuation Rift

Intel’s long-awaited manufacturing turnaround has reached a critical milestone. According to industry reports, the chipmaker’s next-generation 18A process node is now achieving yields between 55 and 75 percent — a threshold widely seen as viable for mass production. That puts the company on track to challenge Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.’s 2-nanometer technology and, more importantly, positions it as the only US-based contract manufacturer capable of handling the most advanced mobile and AI processors.

The news has electrified the stock. Intel shares closed Friday at €105.94, a fresh 52-week high, after surging roughly 13% during the session. The rally extends a breathtaking run: the stock has appreciated about 215% year-to-date and roughly 430% over the past twelve months. The company’s market capitalisation now exceeds $600 billion, vaulting it past rival Oracle.

Behind the momentum is a deepening bet on artificial intelligence. US regulators over the weekend cleared Intel to expand its strategic partnership with SambaNova, a developer of specialised AI acceleration systems. By integrating those flexible chips into its data centres, Intel aims to offer an alternative to the dominant graphics processors from competitors.

But the most explosive catalyst may still be in the making. Multiple reports indicate that Intel is nearing an agreement to manufacture chips for Apple, ending years of negotiations between the two tech giants. Apple has long relied almost exclusively on TSMC for its most advanced processors, but a combination of tight global capacity — driven by the AI boom — and a desire for supply-chain flexibility has pushed it to explore Intel’s foundry services. Sources suggest Apple may wait for the even more advanced 18A-P variant, which could reach volume production next year.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Intel?

Wall Street, however, remains deeply divided. The consensus among 32 analysts covering Intel is a “Hold” rating, with average price targets clustering between $65 and $80 — well below the current trading level. Sceptics point to historically high valuation multiples and question whether the enormous capital spending on new fabs will deliver acceptable returns anytime soon.

Intel’s management is set to face those questions directly in the coming weeks. The annual shareholder meeting is scheduled for May 13, followed by CEO Lip-Bu Tan’s appearance at a J.P. Morgan technology conference on May 19. Then on June 2, CFO David Zinsner will take the stage at the BofA Global Technology Conference to outline how the company plans to absorb the heavy investments in its factory expansion. On July 23, Intel will report its summer-quarter results, where analysts expect concrete updates on a potential Apple manufacturing deal.

To finance its aggressive buildout, Intel has turned to creative dealmaking. A joint venture with Apollo Global Management recently injected $11 billion into a facility in Ireland, providing critical liquidity. Operationally, the company has also shown improvement: first-quarter earnings per share of $0.29 comfortably beat consensus estimates.

Intel at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The combination of a validated process node, strategic AI partnerships, and a tantalizing Apple relationship has supercharged Intel’s comeback narrative. Whether the stock’s current price already reflects those promises — or leaves room for disappointment — will be tested in the weeks ahead.
