Intel is accelerating its efforts in the competitive field of AI inference. The semiconductor giant announced a multi-year strategic partnership with AI inference startup SambaNova Systems on Tuesday, aiming to deliver faster and more cost-effective solutions for running artificial intelligence models.

Partnership Details and Financial Involvement

The collaboration will focus on developing AI inference solutions built on Intel's Xeon server infrastructure. These offerings are targeted at AI-native firms, model providers, enterprises, and government bodies globally. In a concurrent development, SambaNova unveiled its new SN50 inference chip, which the company claims operates five times faster than rival solutions while reducing inference costs to one-third of those associated with traditional GPUs. Reports identified SoftBank as the inaugural customer, with plans to deploy the SN50 in its Japanese data centers.

Intel's commitment extends beyond technology. Intel Capital is participating in SambaNova's $350 million Series E funding round, led by Vista Equity Partners and Cambium Capital. The specific investment amount from Intel was not disclosed. This financial move follows earlier, unsuccessful discussions where Intel reportedly considered acquiring SambaNova for approximately $1.6 billion.

Governance and Leadership Considerations

A notable aspect of the deal involves the pre-existing relationship between Intel's CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, and SambaNova. Tan has served as Chairman of SambaNova's board since 2017 and was an early investor through his venture firm, Walden International. Intel stated that Tan recused himself from the partnership negotiations. Those talks were led by Executive Vice President Kevork Kechichian, who oversees the Data Center and AI group. A company spokesperson emphasized that established corporate governance processes ensure decisions are made in Intel's best interest, a critical point for maintaining investor confidence in strategic deals.

Market Context and Product Roadmap

This announcement arrives during a period of robust sentiment within the semiconductor sector, partly fueled by other significant industry agreements, such as AMD's major AI infrastructure deal with Meta. For Intel, the SambaNova partnership aligns with a broader strategy to address diverse AI infrastructure needs. The company clarified that the collaboration does not alter its own GPU development roadmap but is intended to help meet the heterogeneous requirements of the inference market by integrating various hardware approaches.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Intel?

However, Intel faces challenges elsewhere. Reports from last Friday suggested a potential delay for its Nova Lake-S desktop processors, possibly pushing their launch to CES 2027 versus the CEO's prior indication of a "late 2026" timeline. Intel has not officially confirmed any postponement. Furthermore, the company has reportedly raised prices for its server CPUs by 10% to 15% due to capacity constraints, with annual capacity largely sold out.

Investors showed a muted initial reaction to the partnership news. Intel shares were trading at €39.30, marking a slight increase over the previous day's closing price. The market may seek further clarity on March 4, when Intel CFO David Zinsner is scheduled to speak at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference. Analysts anticipate he may provide additional details on the financial implications of the SambaNova partnership and Intel's broader AI monetization strategy.
