Intel Forges Strategic AI Alliance with SambaNova Systems
24.02.2026 - 15:32:57 | boerse-global.deIn a significant move to bolster its position in the competitive AI chip market, Intel has entered into a multi-year technology partnership with startup SambaNova Systems. This collaboration extends beyond a simple public relations gesture, aiming to position Intel closer to major AI budgets within the data center sector. The alliance raises questions about its potential to challenge Nvidia's current market dominance.
Financial Stake and Strategic Alignment
The partnership is structured around two key pillars. First, SambaNova has committed to utilizing Intel's server processors and graphics cards in its systems over the coming years. Second, the companies plan a joint effort to drive sales and marketing initiatives. Their focus will be on promoting "heterogeneous" AI data center infrastructure, which integrates different types of processors rather than relying on a single vendor's architecture.
Adding a layer of strategic investment, Intel is participating in SambaNova's Series E funding round, which totals $350 million. The specific financial contribution from Intel was not disclosed. Other investors in this round include Vista Equity Partners, Battery Ventures, and accounts advised by T. Rowe Price Associates. This equity participation signals Intel's intent to secure strategic access through capital involvement, not just technology supply.
The timing of the deal is notable. In January, Bloomberg reported that Intel had previously explored an acquisition of SambaNova for approximately $1.6 billion, but those discussions ultimately ended without a deal. Both companies declined to comment on the earlier talks when approached by CNBC.
New Hardware Enters the Fray
Coinciding with the partnership announcement, SambaNova unveiled its new SN50 chip. According to CEO Rodrigo Liang in statements to CNBC, this processor is designed to deliver greater performance than the GPUs found in Nvidia's B200 systems while offering more computational power per dollar. A critical feature for large-scale AI deployments is the chip's ability to interconnect up to 256 units, forming extensive AI clusters.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Intel?
To provide commercial validation, SambaNova has named its first reference customer. SoftBank is set to become the initial client deploying the SN50 in next-generation AI data centers located in Japan. While not yet a mass-market endorsement, this agreement serves as a tangible anchor for the company's product roadmap.
Addressing Governance and Potential Conflicts
The partnership also brings corporate governance into focus. Intel's CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, has served as Chairman of SambaNova's board since 2017 and was an early investor through his venture firm, Walden International. Intel has clarified that Tan recused himself from the partnership negotiations. Those discussions were led by Intel's Executive Vice President, Kevork Kechichian. By proactively addressing this potential conflict of interest, the companies emphasize the transparency crucial for a strategic alliance of this scale.
Market reaction to the news has been positive. Intel's shares traded at €37.83, marking an increase of 2.16% on the day of the announcement. Investors await the next scheduled financial update, with Intel's subsequent quarterly report due on April 23, 2026.
