Infineon shares surge 91% year-to-date, driven by AI power semiconductor demand, but trade above analyst targets amid high volatility.

For the first time since the dot-com boom, Infineon stock has breached the €70 mark, closing Friday at €73.19 — a gain of almost six percent in a single session. The recovery to those heights has been stunning: the shares have advanced 110.74 percent over the past twelve months and have nearly doubled since the start of 2025, with a year-to-date gain of 91.07 percent. But this is not a repeat of the late-1990s tech frenzy. Infineon has undergone a fundamental transformation from a cyclical chipmaker into the backbone of AI data centre infrastructure.

The driver of the rally is no longer the classic automotive and industrial cycles. Power semiconductors, used to manage the massive electricity demands of AI servers, have turned Infineon into a direct beneficiary of the capex wave sweeping the sector. The company expects AI data centre revenue to reach around €1.5 billion in 2026 and €2.5 billion in 2027 — a trajectory that has reshaped the investment case.

Despite the breakneck pace, the technical picture shows no extreme overextension yet. The relative strength index sits at 57.7, well below overbought territory. But the annualised volatility over the past month stands at 56.02 percent, and the distance from the 200-day moving average — now at €40.34 — has widened to 81.45 percent. Such a stretch heightens the risk of a pullback, even if the longer-term trend remains intact.

The current market price already exceeds the average analyst target of €68.33, signalling that the stock is running ahead of consensus estimates. Dividend expectations are modest: a mean forecast of €0.395 per share for 2026, up from €0.35 a year earlier. The real story remains the AI narrative.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?

Infineon is also investing to secure its technological edge. The company has launched Moore4Power, a three-year research project with a budget of €91 million, co-financed through the European Chips Joint Undertaking and Horizon Europe. It brings together 62 partners from 15 countries and focuses on heterogeneous integration — combining silicon, silicon carbide and gallium nitride with sensor, control and communication functions into compact systems. Applications range from wind turbines to electric vehicles and railway drives. Crucially, the project aims to slash development cycles from several weeks to roughly one week using AI and digital twins.

The upcoming week offers several catalysts that could sustain momentum. On Tuesday, Infineon hosts a webinar on DC-DC applications across high- and low-voltage domains. Wednesday brings its participation in the DB Access Championship Conference in Frankfurt, alongside another webinar on modelling and simulating GaN power systems. Gallium nitride remains a key technology for improving power efficiency in data centres.

"AI and semiconductors remain the decisive drivers," said Andreas Lipkow, market analyst at CMC Markets. European tech stocks rallied hard on Friday even as Nvidia’s own quarterly report failed to spark a similar surge in the US. Infineon was again the strongest performer in the DAX, where its market capitalisation has swelled to around €96 billion — more than double the €45 billion it commanded a year ago.

Infineon at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

All eyes now turn to early August, when Infineon will publish its third-quarter results on the 5th. Until then, the share price must defend the €70 level, and the technical and event-driven catalysts will test whether the AI infrastructure story has sufficient substance to sustain the record run. If the company demonstrates that its technical leadership is translating into revenue momentum, the rally has a solid foundation. Without fresh impetus, however, the market may start to focus on how far and fast the share price has already run.
