Infineon’s Pricing Pivot: A 25% Hike and a Patent Puzzle

Infineon stock hits decade-high as price hikes boost margins, but a patent dispute with Innoscience and a new Japanese competitor threaten its lead in power chips.

Infineon has been on a tear. The stock has surged over 44% in the past 30 days alone, hitting a fresh decade-high of €54.11 before settling back to €53.52. That puts the chipmaker just shy of its record, with a year-to-date gain of nearly 40%. But beneath the surface of this rally lies a tangled web of pricing power, competitive threats, and a patent dispute that refuses to deliver a clean verdict.

The Price Lever Nobody’s Talking About

Since the start of April, Infineon has quietly pushed through price increases of up to 25% on select power switches and power ICs. The company cites rising manufacturing costs as the trigger, but the timing is convenient. AI data center demand is booming, and the chipmaker is positioned to capture a slice of that growth. These higher prices have yet to be factored into the current outlook, meaning they represent a potential margin lever when Infineon reports its second-quarter results on May 6.

Analysts are penciling in revenue of around €3.8 billion for the quarter — a notable year-on-year increase. The market will be watching the operating margin closely, particularly given the stock now trades roughly 24% above its 50-day moving average. That kind of premium leaves little room for error.

A Patent Win That’s Not Quite a Win

The legal tussle with Chinese GaN rival Innoscience is adding a layer of uncertainty. The US International Trade Commission (ITC) issued a preliminary ruling that found patent infringement — but only on Innoscience’s older high-voltage products. The Chinese competitor’s current product design was deemed non-infringing, and a second Infineon patent was cleared entirely.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Infineon?

Infineon holds around 450 GaN patent families and considers itself the market leader in this segment. In Germany, the German Patent Office upheld a modified version of one of its patents, and the Munich I Regional Court found Innoscience in violation back in August 2025. But the ITC outcome remains unresolved. An import ban on Innoscience products into the US, once a possibility, now looks less likely.

The Japanese Threat

While Infineon battles in the courtroom, a new competitive front is forming in Japan. Rohm, Toshiba, and Mitsubishi Electric are planning to merge their power semiconductor divisions, creating a formidable challenger in the lucrative silicon carbide chip market. Infineon currently commands roughly 17% of that segment globally, and the Japanese consortium is eyeing that lead.

Infineon’s response has been to ramp up investment. The company has increased its capital expenditure budget for the current year to €2.7 billion, with the new Dresden fab — a roughly €5 billion project — expected to start production in early July.

The Auto Anchor

The automotive business remains the bedrock. Infineon has held the global No. 1 position in automotive chips for six consecutive years, and its microcontroller market share stands at 36%. China accounts for 43% of its automotive revenue, making pricing discipline in that market a critical focus for the upcoming earnings call.

What the Street Expects

Jefferies has reiterated its buy rating despite a €52 price target that the stock has already exceeded. The analyst sees Infineon’s structural strength in microcontrollers for software-defined vehicles as a long-term growth driver. For fiscal 2026, the consensus among 30 analysts points to revenue of €15.9 billion — roughly 7% above the trailing twelve months — with earnings per share of €1.63, more than double the expected figure for fiscal 2025.

The Q2 report on May 6 will test whether the market’s optimism is justified. With pricing power on display, a patent cloud overhead, and a new Japanese rival taking shape, Infineon’s next chapter is anything but predictable.
